Simultaneous clean/oil the lanes as featured on most machines is there because it is time saving and reliable way of maintaining the whole length of the lane bed.

If you clean only then oil only, you are having to run the machine twice as many times and using more cloth, time, volts and wear/tear on drive mechanisms.
If you clean only then do a simultaneous run, you are essentially double cleaning the lane prior to oiling it - using more cloth, cleaner, time, volts and wear/tear on drive mechanisms.

Some older lane machines (or newer ones not maintained properly) necessitate clean only first prior to oiling the lanes.
