  • Gearbox clutch neglect

Recently replaced wormshaft and associated clutch parts on an A model that had an unbearable chattering noise coming from the clutch.

The pictures tell the story. Clutch plate bearing seized causing the boss to rotate on the disc. Pin in cone that locks the boss is worn down and obviously been grinding into the boss. Friction material worn almost down o the rivets. Rivets broken allowing them to come into contact with disc. Wormshaft spline badly worn, disc spline so badly worn its close to slipping.

What I found interesting was it's not often you find so many faults in the one assembly. To have so many critical components all failing at the same time is a first for me.

Looks like typical corporate maintenance, this is how the managers use to get their yearly bonuses at the end of the year. Just short maintenance, they are an overhead and never show any profit.

Little do they realize that a tube of grease goes a long way.

          Saving money now, aren't they!

I've heard about the regional maintenance manager for AMF in my locality denying spare parts to his FM's to ensure he picks up his bonus. False economy really.
