  • Advice for cloning a drive in a really old system

I've been tasked with keeping a really old scoring box going (photos included below). It's still working, but the hard drive is on the way out, so I'm hoping I can get it cloned before it dies (the drive is 25 years old!). I have already replaced the power supply.

I'm not highly experienced in the bowling world, but I do have a background in computers (but most of my experience is after DOS). So I maybe just searching for the wrong thing.

I have access to 2 drives/scoring boxes, one still works most of the time (a 600MB Western Digital) and the other is a 20GB Maxtor with bad sectors.

I have made a backup of both drives using both Norton Ghost and using `dd` on Linux (to get a byte by byte copy). However whenever I try to restore them to another drive (I have tried a 1GB, 2GB and 4GB Compact Flash, and a handful of other older drives that are less than 20GB - larger drives are not detected correctly by the BIOS), it hangs during boot.

I have tried restoring using `dd`, and Ghost (both partition and whole disk), and most of the time things boot OK initially, until it hangs on the VGA BIOS screen (as per image below).

I'm hoping someone has seen something like this before and can tell me what I'm doing wrong/missing?

I have looked at a number of other threads (this was most promising - my cloning rig looks almost identical!) but I can't appear to find anyone with the same issue as I'm running into.

I have tested with MS-DOS and FreeDOS, and things boot OK using the same drives, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

    Any thoughts/ideas welcome!

    Thanks in advance!
