  • Durabowl Bumpers not controlled reliably by BES-X Scoring

I've got two lanes on adjacent pairs that are not being controlled reliably by the scoring system. You'll hear the valves cycling several times when it's the next bowler's turn and the bumpers need to go up. Bumpers will go up and down rapidly, and then sometimes stay up or sometimes stay down. In this case the problem started on lane 15, but lane 16 is fine. Lane 14 however has started having the same problem, and lane 13 is fine.

    Wiring connections seem snug.

If you manually put the bumpers up from our vintage Durabowl switch bank at the front desk, the bumpers will go right up and stay up without issue.

Originally we thought it might be a dirty or failing valve, or water in the lines. But since the distinction seems to be whether the bumpers are controlled from the desk or from scoring, I'm leaning towards electrical. Anything in particular I should look at? What am I missing?

Do you have a Qubica BCU (bumper control unit) on the curtain wall for each pair of lanes? If you do, you have a green LED for bumpers up and a red one for bumpers down for each lane.

I would check the wiring to your bumper control box in the back on the curtain wall. If one of the valve wires is making bad contact there I could see that happening. Or you might even have a control box that is going south on you. Easy way to check that is move one from a good pair and swap them.

We've got the original BCU I think. Only a single red LED for each lane, shows bumpers UP when lit. BCU is chained in between XLMP and F-Box on the curtain wall. I'm pretty sure our Durabowl installation (1999 or so) pre-dates our original Qubica scoring installation (2001).

I will recheck the curtain wall wiring and try swapping BCU with a spare unit.
