New Sport Bowling League

What do you guys think of these new sport bowling leagues in the works. It looks like we are going to be running it 3 nights a week wow! For those of you that are not familiar with sport bowling, it is a new type of league that is set up by ABC/WIBC. It seems that they also dictate what shot is put out. Hey whatever brings in the bowlers right? Well Im just a little concerned at what we are stepping into here. Next thing you know the mens league hears you have a special shot for another league and then they want to tell you how they want their lanes dressed and so on............ Then a year down the road you have 15 leagues with 15 different shots. Maybe im reading into this a little deep, but with lane conditions being such a heated topic these days you never know. Thank DBA for the phoenix eh!

I got the same league Wednsday Nights. It was started by some people affiliated with the WIBC. As to the shot, there is a "pattern" that goes with it. Problem is, the pattern is on a sanction not a pheonix or excell or magnum or summit. So any house without the Sanction will not lay down the true Sport condition. Closest thing we got is 1-1 FLAT! 42 feet i think or 46...and throughout the league there still 250-279's shot every wednsday! so...go figure. But you have to see the Long term aspect of these leagues. OIL People...Oil is expensive, with 60-70 units per lane, sheesh thats alot! Oh well, guess we just need to hit the GM's up for more $$ for more Oil.

Got the first look at the shot they want me to lay out today it is a flat shot 42 feet, on anvillane thats a long ways to go. I just cut my oil back to 32 feet because 35 was carrying down to the pinsetters. I dont know how to break it to them but 42 feet will play hell with my back end. BTW I have a phoenix and they handed me a sheet of paper with the numbers on it to plug into the program.

im currently putting out a 45' wall. 42' flat would be my dream....the knuckle ballin resin gods would be out to lunch while im still thwackin the pocket.

I think the sport league concept could be a good addition to league bowling.
I myself think that it is something more for the mens leagues or the scratch leagues.
As far as having 60 or so units of oil here is a good story.
We had a local scratch bowling club that was coming to our center for a tourn.
They wanted the lanes TOUGH.
Well I stripped the lanes twice and oiled to 20 feet and buffed to 32 feet then hit the heads another 10 feet.
After about 2 practice balls the bowlers were saying where in the hell is Graham and what is this?
I just smiled and said you wanted the lanes TOUGH and they do not have to be flooded to be TOUGH.
A respectable 210 avg. for 16 games won the tourn.

There are a few things to understand regarding the "Sport Leagues".

First the patterns must be useable for ALL the maintenace equipment on the market.

The centers participating in this phase of research will be divided up into various groups based on the lane machine used. DBA/Brunswick will take care of their equipment, AMF will handle their equipment, etc. The ABC will service the other centers.

All the entities were asked to aid in the research/data collection process with no favoritism towards a specific company.

The leagues have been structured such that each bowler knows what the conditions will promote...shoot making!!!!

Veratillity and adaptablility are the key to become the great bowler. Without the ability to adapt and overcome they are just regular bowlers.

Are you saying that ABC wants to make real bowlers out of wanna-be's? Sounds like closing the barn door after the horses have all gone...

We have just put a sport type league on for the fall, looks like it might be a good one. It will be bowling 35 weeks, the shot the first 7 weeks will be on the High Roller shot, Every 7th week there will be a position round and a shot change after that. Team USA, ABC, WIBC, and College shot are what we will use. So far there are 14 teams of 3 we are bowling scratch and using the Brunswick PBA Gold pins. The bowlers have all gone into the league with the understanding that the shot will be a challenge. So far most members of the league are looking foward to the challenge, even after the first grueling week <grin>. I am bowling in the league myself, so I will keep all of you posted as we progress through the season.

Hey, I got a ~new~ sport league idea... Wanna make ~real~ bowlers out of these wanna-bes??? Simple. Drastically change the shot every week. That way they have to learn how to read the lanes, and adapt and overcome every condition imagineable.

(Oh, wait a minute... 'round here it's already like that -- Guess our house is a step ahead for once )

The sad thing is that bowlers don't like to be brought down to reality. I couldn't even sell the "Sport Shot League" to the adults, so i had to sell it to the jrs. Even that didn't work out. We only had 22 sign ups (singles matchplay) and into the 8th week we had 7 drop outs, They couldn't handle it! LOL! However, the best bowlers, (the ones that ave 220230 on a wall) absolutely love that league, and only the house bowlers that can't ave 200 on a house shot are the ones that left.
But overall, its just an attempt to bring sport back to bowling, instead of recreation

I have a great idea for a tournament.
Since I use a Century 100C it takes a little work for me but, 4 games across 8 lanes with each pair having a different dressing pattern. Bowlers must figure out the shot as they move.
One pair regular house shot, one pair with extremely short dressing, one lane with extremely long dressing and one pair with heavy outside and very little in the middle.
I believe this will show the hot shot, shot in the box bowlers that they must learn to read and adjust for varying conditions.
