  • Gearbox drain plug

I have a gearbox that is having gear oil seep out of the drain plug

Has anyone ever had to use thread sealing tape on the drain plug?

i Have but usually put some rtv on the plug anyway. as the gearboxs gets warmer things expand a little and thins the old out causing some gearboxes to seep like that. not all of them do it though.

20 lanes of National motors and I haven't noticed any of them seep out. Is there a hair line cracked in the gearbox I wonder? Have you tired a different plug just for kicks and giggles.

Good thought on that. The plugs are cut with an NPT, or pipe thread so they should not require anything other than clean threads. However; In dealing with cast components, and heavy handed mechs who think torque specs are a starting point on the way to good and tight, you might be dealing with pulled threads and a dab of sealer is in order.

I always put a layer of teflon tape on the plugs just to be 100% sure it wont leak

We have Westinghouse combos, and all the drain plugs have been spot welded closed. No worries, though, they leak anyway.

I always seal the plugs up with aircraft grade Permatex. It's a brown colored stuff. Never had a plug leak yet.

                    Nothing surprises me anymore.
If it cant be fixed with a hammer, use a bowling pin.

Its rare for the plug to leak... but usually its damage to the thread of the casing or the plug itself not permitting a proper seal. Teflon tape would correct that without much fuss.

                        Thread tape sealed the plug.

Ran for a couple hours on the bench with a clean paper towel under it - no seepage.

And yes - no dist. drive housing on it either

I had a 4:1 go bad and I've never seen or done one before. Trying to search the depths of the forums, YouTube videos, it didn't seem too bad....

Left a rant about this in the bowling forum…
