  • SWEEP ARM

I just replaced an upper sweep arm that was a bit bent and catching on sweep drive arm bolt and against the sweep rocker arm. Put the new one on and its only marginaly better, not jamming but still just touching. As far as i can see everything is where it should be, nothing broken anywhere. The only thing I can think to do is redrill mounting holes in frame, any other ideas?

You can loosen the u bolts that secure the sweep link pivot shafts to the machine and get a little adjustment room there or you may have to shim one or both u bolts to pivot the shaft or raise one side of it so the sweep links have clearance from everything. Of course after that you probably will have to re adjust the sweep as doing this will throw the adjustments off.

I would NOT recommend drilling new holes for the mounting u bolts, that's a mess I don't think you want to get into. You should be able to shim or pivot the pivot shaft to gain enough clearance with no problem.

Have already shimmed but I suppose I can try and shim the sh#t out of it

There are two ways you can shim the pivot shaft...

        1. You can shim one side to raise that side of the shaft. Putting shims under both legs of one u bolt will 'tilt' the sweep links in that direction.

        2. You can shim to turn the pivot shaft. Putting shims under one leg of each u bolt on OPPOSITE CORNERS will 'rotate' the the sweep in that direction.

        What exactly is hitting?

-is the sweep link hitting the rocker arm bolt?

-is any part of the link contacting the frame of the machine at zero?

-does the pivot bolt on the inside two sweep links rub the machine frame or contact the long connecting rod?

-does the bolt that goes thru the threaded link that bolts the telescoping link hit the sweep link as it goes by?

Maybe a pic of the area where it is hitting may help.

Hey Rhys, what condition are the flange bushings in that surround the main pivot shaft at the top of the sweep arms? I had a pair that I could NOT adjust to save myself, and discovered the bushings were so badly chewed out and the pivot shafts were really worn, but now with all new bits in there it runs fine, also the sweep bar brackets (the fixed ones NOT the slide type) were badly bent which also pushed the sweep arms over causing them to hit the frame...

I thought he said the parts were good but for sure like you said, if those bushings are wasted the sweep will have a lot of sideways slop in it, yeah came across a few of those myself. What a difference when you put in new parts, it's so nice and smooth and tight.

The new arm is tight and firm, the old one was sloppy as. TJ it's hitting other sweep arms, the sweep drive arm bolt and rubbing up against the sweep rocker arm. It's really hanging to the left

Sounds like more shimming is in order, since all the parts are good, tight, and straight.... right?

shimmy shimmy. Shimmed the wrong side, strangely enough it helped clear the bolts but not the framework, put the shims on the other side and hey presto just enough clearance. Thanx for the advice guys, as usual BT ROCKS!
