  • Hump Back Help

    Noticed EBN Hump belt was getting a broken hump so pulled lift and put in a Duro Belt. Centered lift rails added 1 washer to bottom of lift arm. After a week when two balls would go in one would get stuck about one foot up and not spin but roll a little up then down. So the ball is slipping on the belt not the rail covers.Tried different heights on the adjustable bottom link and bumpers on top link. Replaced spring on top pulley , replaced shock and removed the washer I added to lift arm. No go. Put the EBN belt back in and it is better but still doing the same thing after half a game. Moved rails for maximum centering and tried to see if they could be pinched together. I must be missing something simple. Never had so many problems with a lift.

    One thing you can try doing is running an S-hook through the bracket with the belt tensioner springs on it...IE the bigger of the 3 holes in that black bracket. Run a chain and a spring to something on the back of the machine, some machines don't have the "slider" bracket on the backs but mine do. It'll give you some more downforce and help. What kind of uprails are you using by the way?

    but if there's anything I've learned about these lifts is this:
    BW = ball weight
    PM = pissed mechanic
    MP = moon phases

    (BW>_14lb AND color =/= green AND purple)*MP+shimed correctly where time < OR > 11:13am = Balls returned properly

    All else results in PM^Infinite.
    When you know what to do, everything is easy.

      I have the Stahls belt tensioner with Brunswick adjustable spring and AMF fat rail covers. I turned the rail covers but since the ball is not spinning it is slipping on the belt. The belt tensioner has been tightened but since the lift is not lifting off the rubber bumpers on the top link when this is happening this does not help. I have also tried it with the belt tensioner off and another time with the shock off. No go. I have run the spring at 3 1/2 inches to tighten the belt and still this happens.

        This may be a stupid question but can you lower the lift any further?

          How about shimming the lift so the whole thing sits closer to the rails.

            Drill a hole in the center of the plate where the carpet drive belt springs attach big enough for a front roller hinge spring

            Put the spring through there

            Put tension on the front roller spring with a turnbuckle and some chain

            You might need to add a piece of steel to put the turnbuckle through - bolt it between the machines at the back just under the power outlets

              Lift is as close to rails as possible. I lower until the ball can not go in then raise enough for it to work. As said I have the Sthals belt tensioner but the lift is resting on the rubber bumpers when this happens so I tried extra tension and it did not work.

                HMM!!!!! I have had to shim the rails themselves closer on a few occasions. Its kind of a pain in the ass but so is a ball return not returning balls. to do this:

                Remove the lift arm
                Remove the uprails
                Then you just undo the bolts on the L brackets and add washers to the 3/8s bolts there which will bring the rails closer to the lift. It'll also make putting the rails back in suck. Who knows? one of your L brackets could be loose or broken.
                When you know what to do, everything is easy.

                  King one of your older posts mentioned no more then 3 washers on the top of the lift arm. I removed the 2 extra washers and one more from the lower to try to lower the arm. Readjusted height. Rolled 36 pairs of balls down 7/8 and none get stuck but sometimes took a little time to return. Can someone explain the lift arm and how too many or too little washers on the top or bottom will cause a certain problem or problems?

                    More washers behind the lift are at the top - the higher the arm sits - the higher the lift must be for the ball to enter

                    Adjust the arm to be flush at the bottom with the door ring

                    Then put one washer behind the delta bracket at the top

                    If the dead space is too large - lower the lift until you have 1/8 between the ball and the lift when the ball is at it's lowest point

                    If you can move the ball forward and create more dead space - you need to bend the lift arm by taking it out - and putting your knee on the apex of the bend then re-install - and check for your 1/8 adjustment and dead space

                      I saw something similar to this once when I helped a friend install a humpy. At his center, the balls would not go up the rails hardly at all. What I found was that the lower bracket that is part of modifiying the lift had plastic crushable spacers that completely fell apart. I put metal washers in place of the crushable spacers and it has not given trouble since then.

                        There is a difference between raising the lift and spacing the lift out farther by adding washers to the bracket.

                          So you mean raising the lift is done on the top link with the cone shaped bumpers and spacing the lift out is done with washers or an adjustable bracket going to the bottom link. How will this help me?

                            I also have 2 flat washers under the lift rail bracket

                            I use flat washers on the rear mount for the lift arm - I space it back as far as possible a=so lock nuts still cover the threads - 8 washers I think

                            Do not use the plastic spacers on the rear mount - they crumble in time

                              I am thinking of trying another lift here as I am getting no where. There is a Duro Link as the bottom link could this have bent?
