I work as a pinchaser at a 12 lane house. We have amf 82-70s. On lane 1 the sweep has been jumping really bad
On the kick back when resetting and also the sweep doesn't go all the way down. Its probably a good inch off the ground. Is this normal? Could it be the motors or gearboxes?

I'd start with checking the crank arm for tight and or worn keyway. Then break out the manual to go over sweep adjustments. Yes, I still have to use the book, Senior moments.
Necessity IS NOT the mother of invention. Laziness IS the mother of invention.

The sweep jumping could just be the rubber bumper sticking and needing replacement. The sweep running an inch off the deck is not bad.
Sometimes we have to do stuff to get by....Just go back and do it right when the "by" has passed!!

This could mean several different things, what exactly do you mean by jumping?

-is the sweep jumping or running erratically while it is running back sweeping off pins?
-is the sweep stopping too high when it goes down, then when it starts it goes down all the way jumping a little as it starts to run back to sweep the deck?
-when the cycle is started as the sweep comes down does it slightly pause midway then sort of slam and bounce at the pindeck?

A couple of things I can think of...

-The bolts in the sweep crank arm may be loose causing either the crank arm to slip on the shaft or causing the sweep to run rough, both bolts on the crank arm must be tight as well as the bolts for the two long sweep arms (among other things)

-The sweep may not be stopping in the correct positions. The sweep has 3 stopping positions....
....First guard, the position the sweep stops at when a cycle is started
....Second guard, the position the sweep stops at after it has cleared the pindeck
....Home, the resting or zero position of the sweep

"Guard" refers to the sweep guard positions. The sweep is at guard when it is all the way down AND all the way forward. "Home" or "Zero" means the sweep is as high up as it will go. If the issue is the sweep is stopping too soon, or before it is supposed to then simple cam adjustments should fix it, refer to the manual or if you find that this is the problem and you don't have a manual ask here.

smurtland has a good point about the sweep bumpers, the little square shaped bumpers on the sweep links, they can become sticky and cause the sweep to violently jump when it leaves first guard, if this is so best to replace them or if you don't have any coat the surface of the bumper and where it contacts the other sweep link with baby powder and it will not stick anymore. I like to set my sweeps at about 5/16" off the pindeck, best to go low but if it is a little higher that's ok too.
