  • AMF Motor Gear Lube Question

The AMF motor repair manual says "Apply a thin coat of Prussian Blue or Red Lead to the worm" in reference to rebuilding a motor. I can only fine a product by Permatex called Prussian Blue, and the description does not seem to be the right kind of thing. I'm curious what most of you do? There didn't appear to be anything on my gears, so I presume the gear oil does most of the work? I don't have any wear on the gears, so do I even need to apply anything to the worm or other gears and bearings in the motor? Thanks!

I am not positive here but I think that that stuff was to see if the worm and wheel were centered during assembly. I guess that you would put it on then together spin it a few revolutions and see if it is shimmed correct.
But that is just a guess!!!

The Prussian Blue sounds like something I used years ago when hand lapping valves.

I think Keeth has pretty much got it. We use what is safely called "gear marking compound" (you can google it). We paint aproximately 10 of the worm wheel teeth with it and run the gearbox for about 10 minutes (under load). We then remove the worm shaft and make adustments to the shims for the wheel bearing races based on the wear pattern shown on the worm gear.

Thanks, I appreciate the answers, guys. In the above method, what am I looking for exactly? I would presume perhaps the "blue" stays where contact has been made? Should the pattern created be centered on the wheel shaft gear? Are there any similar adjustments for the off-set or distributor gears?

You will see a wear pattern where the gears are meshing. You want to see this pattern in the middle of the worm gear. No other areas are called for
