  • Booted u-joints

Sounds like the style King was talking about is a nice piece. My whole center has the boot style. Is there much that goes wrong with the booted style I should look for?

I've been overhauling my distributors lately. Pulling the full unit and rebuilding them, and reinstalling them back on their lane. I remove the drive shaft, clean off old lube, reapply, and install. Haven't really paid attention to the u joints other than to check operation.

Should I be removing the boot and such? Curiosity is speaking. Thanks again king for bringing up the topic.

If you have a little slop in the joint where one side can turn a little where the other half dont, this can cause a wavy movement in the indexing from the 7 to 8 or 10 to 9 before it just breaks and screws up your carpet

I have greased the booted style before, thinking it would add a little life to them. Take an oiling needle and screw a grease zerk into the end. Then just poke it into the side if the boot. We also use these to squirt a little grease into the tube of the safety link. Cuz I always thought there should be grease where metal meets metal.

Can't say that we've ever had much of a problem with them here, House. According to our log since 2008 we've replaced 7. 5 of which happened in 08, then didn't replace any from Jan 09 to Jan 12.
