  • Grounding straps

Ive been wondering... Besides scoring issues, does not having the grounding strap on the bounce plate cause any other issues? I have 40 lanes and not a single one is on any bounce plates. Ive seen at least one lane arcing by the front roller before. Could this possibly have any ill effects with a solid state chassis with omega tek boards?

It can cause alot of other electrical issues not to mention a fire which would be catastophic. There was a previous thread on here a few months back but I can't seem to find it.

I remember the thread, and yes you do need to put those bonding straps on. Besides the scoring, electrical and fire potentials. That static can knock your butt either off or into a machine.

Ps. In the least it just might be strong enough to make you pee your pants.

Now peeing your pants would be really catastrophic if you were sitting on the chassis

Remember, the bounce board straps are original AMF installed. So, I'd hook em up to prevent the static build up, unless you are in the tropics.

Go buy some 8awg wire to replace that strap. It will last 10x longer.

I have found its not the wire that fails its the connections that break off.

You are right TJ. Those rings don't last very long. I have made them with heavy gauge wire, but after talking to folks and doing a bit of reading I found that the mesh style is the one to use. Due to the fact that you have many strands and it is much more flexible.

None of the centers I've worked at have ever had them on. I didn't know about them until coming across it hanging on the wall and looking it up in the book a year or 2 after starting work on the machines. All of the machines have extensive grounding from the frames to a building ground. Never seen any arcing nor have I ever received a shock. I can see how it would build up a static charge though, just like mini vandegraff generators.

Guess I'll be ordering some straps in the near future. I don't wanna pee in a chassis

As said, the braided straps will last longer simply because they are able to flex a lot more at the connections. A "regular" wire with connectors won't last as it is too rigid at the connectors.

Don't forget to ground your dizy carriage as well. You either need a metal roller on the lower right side or configure a strap like the 90's have for their pinwheel. I found that using those same bonding straps for the carpets, cut one inch from the metal ring and then frayed then installed on the pin guide mounting bolt above the said roller then just bend down to contact the carriage, works well too. I had a bunch left over one time so I thought I would experiment a little.

I had a 4:1 go bad and I've never seen or done one before. Trying to search the depths of the forums, YouTube videos, it didn't seem too bad....
