• Distributer Sway

Guys, What makes a distibuter sway back and forth? It is worse on the 4, 7, side than the 6, 10 side. It sometimes is swaying so bad that it misses the slot altogether. That then starts a pileup.
Thanks

Also check the dist. drive shaft drive houseing for wear. If it's worn swap it out with the other lane in it's pair. It will then drive from the oppisite side and not run across the worn area.Or a bent drive shaft.

Re: Distributer Sway

This thread seems familiar to me...

Anyway, check the following:

-Everything mentioned above
-possible bent drive shaft and/or pulley shaft.
-too much clutch tension/dry sleeve inside.
-weak springs (safety & lateral)
-proper spacers on post.
-proper level of post and "elbow" mount.
-bent output shaft from gearbox.
-poor lubrication of dist housing weldment.

Alot of variables can cause this so it would help to know what you've done and checked for already.
Let us know.

See Tim's dist mod.

Add a slow down pulley.

Check to see if the connection between the pinion and the inner clutch plate is worn. This will normally cause more sway between the 2 and 3 though

Re: Distributer Sway

Believe it or not, I've seen a drive shaft in place and running with one ball missing. This can happen when there is a jam at the 7 or 10, where the shaft is fartest out and the jerking of the O-pan due to the jamming makes it come out just a little too far and the ball pops off. Not noticeable at first glance...usually found later when checking for distributor wobble.

Re: Distributer Sway

Make sure that "elbow" distributor mount is plumb (perpendicular to the ground). Had one wobbling something terrible at the 4 and 7. Replaced everything. Gearbox housing weldment, drive shaft, pinion & sleeve, everything.

Then Kat suggested that the elbow might not be level. Bingo! A little bolt loosening and tapping the elbow with a rubber mallet, it stopped all wobble (and stopped eating up our parts inventory)!
Thanx, Keith!

I did have a look at his pictures and I was wondering(IF you want to do something like this); why don't you put a tie wrap around all the spring windings and put a new tie wrap on(only two cents worth) if you have to re-adjust the distibutor. Didn't try any of the above. Maybe I missed something....

Thats my two cents..

hey lampie
What is the coast to turn a nut at the end of a bolt to adjust the Distributor
also the eye bolt coast . 80 the spring around $3.00 so what is it that you really don't like about the Distributor mod

Tim,

I can not say what I like or not about your distributor mod because I haven't tried it yet(I only know it because of your pictures).
My question about using tie wraps was because I was wondering if your mod has more advantages(at least you say so) than I could see on your pictures.

So again: maybe I did miss something...
