DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
I did a search, and have found little on this topic. What are other mechanics using to lubricate the pinion gear and sleeves on original style clutch setups? I use 20W non detergent on mine. Anyone find a better setup? Grease....WD-40....? I think this is a good topic. Thanks.Tags: None

Re: DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
We were using 10-40, 80-90 or whatever happened to be in the oil can at the time. The type of lube used doesn't really matter, just as long as it's used at about 3 month intervals. Now we don't lube them at all. We got the lubeless style & haven't had a problem in about 3 years.

Re: DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
I drilled out all the pinion oiling holes to 3/16, to allow for an extra large drop of 40 wt. oil. We average about 50,000 games a month, so we oil the pinions once a month. If you're in doubt about how much oil to use, just touch the inside dist. plate after the machine has been running for a few hours. If the plate is hot, you have a problem."Gun control is the policy of tyrants"

Talon,
We're very happy with them. You can get them thru Stahl's but the makers are enviro-bushing. Check them out at <a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank">http://www.envirobushings.com</a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a> They have lots more than just the pinion bushing. If you use their lubeless stop blade along with their pinion bushing the clutch becomes TOTALLY LUBELESS.

when i started workin on 70's, we had an amf serviceman every other week - he swore up and down to use 20 or 30 wt non detergent. i stayed with his theory until after seeing brunswick mechs use grease on their worm shafts. i tried standard wheel brg hi temp grease. it works very well. you never have to worry about it running into the clutch and makin the disc slip. i also now coat the outer clutch plate where the worm contacts it. just give it a try on one - but stick with non detergent with anything you oil with a can.

Re: DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
Use the regular pinion sleeve. As for the pinion bushing itself;
The # from Stahl’s is 070-006-679-G. The price is $9.65 ea.
The # from Enviro Bushings is N56016. The price is $8.27 ea.
I know that the price is about 5 times that of the bronze but it’s worth every penny.

We also went to the lubeless bushing on all lanes....and we also apply small amount of grease to front plate where worm gear contacts, keeps it from "digging in".

Re: DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
Does Stahl's have a website? I'd love to be able to order these lubeless bushings and stop blades from my local distributor but I am not sure if they can get them or not.

Re: DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
The only website for Stahl’s that I know of is <a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.gobowling.com/budservice" target="_blank">http://www.gobowling.com/budservice</a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a> in California. Bud has the Stahl’s catalog on line there but last I knew the prices had not been updated. For a hardcopy of their catalog, you can call Stahl’s Seventy’s in Minnesota. The # is 1-800-309-8909.
I don’t think Stahl’s has the lubeless stop blades. (There have been some legal problems between them & the manufacturer, Enviro Bushings) Only <a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.envirobushings.com" target="_blank">http://www.envirobushings.com</a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a> has the entire line of lubeless products.
A personal note about Bud; 22 years ago, he was the 1st Head Mechanic at the Reno Hilton, at that time it was called The MGM Grand.

Re: DISTIBUTOR PINION GEAR LUBRICATION?
The best lubricant that I have found for pinion’s is plastic “E” sleeve bearing lubricant.
The part number starts with 715- look in the AMF price list you should be able to find it.
I am at home and don’t have a book here. The tube say’s it will last 6 years, but I clean and reapply it every six months or so. It’s great stuff.
