  • Front Pit Carpet Rollers

Does anyone know how to stop the front roller from being noisy. New pins and bush don't stay quiet for very long.
    Any ideas most welcome.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Front Pit Carpet Rollers

If it is still noisy chances are the holes in your roller hinge and body are wore out. In a thread in the gen. discussion I mentioned about the link assy. and vantage not making the ones with the steel bushings. Finially on Thurs. I cought up with my buddy with the machine shop and he is going to make me some out of some HARD stuff.

I have found that alot of the noise is caused by excessive sideways play between the brass link and tha hinge. Remove your link from the hinge and squeese the hinge a little closer together in a vice. Don't make it too tight, you need some movement. Good Luck.

Use AMF spring washers #000 024 926 on one or both sides of the brass link, depending on the amount of side play.

Don't despair: a new idea utilizing solid front rollers and a new tracking system is in the works. More later. Suffice it to say I have a few running now and what a pleasure it is to hear only the motor running.

My understanding of this is that the "Humpy" people are comeing out with this and you also need a special carpet for this up grade. $$$, but if it does the job $$$$ dosnt matter if it's going to last. It's just tuff to get it past the "Expedition" kind of driveing kind of people. aka.... the owner's!

              Re: Front Pit Carpet Rollers

If someone comes out with something to replace front rollers I will gladly test 16 of them. Anything to do away with rebuilding front rollers. I would rather replace a table drive shaft.

Lifelong's new carpet is supposed to track like no one would believe and last 6+ years, but I'm not sure that it will work with a solid roller. But for the day when solid rollers are a reality, I've got the specs on how to make them out of old rear rollers. They need to be cut 1/2" shorter and a new end welded or bolted on. More on this later, but save your old rollers whose shafts have been destroyed or cut off.

after seeing the carpet setup on the gs-92
where they use a fixed front roller and adjustable rear roller we tried a solid front roller with adjustable front supports in one of our 30's. to make the roller solid we just centred the halves so that the bearings were equal at each end then welded a piece of steel into the gap. the adjuster
was a long piece of threaded rod connected to the support spring at the front and placed through a hole in the rear plough support apron at the back. outcome was that the adjuster didn't have any effect on the tracking and i have since refitted the old spring support pins. we still run the solid roller and it is tracking very nicely.

I tried that too, Len, with the same results. I think instead of "springy tension" we need "solid tension". I believe GS and Mendes have that. But it seems like something you'd have to stay on top of...visual inspections of tracking along with frequent adjustments.
By the way, speakinng of GS and Mendes, does anybody else like those straight-up pin elevators?

I think the key factor here is making shure the plates are aligned 99% and the quality control on the carpet's is 100%. I cant see this working any other way.
