• 8270 front end frames breaking!!

any body ever had the front end frame break and come down where the table pillow block bolts on,spot-respot arm side?? I DID ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO,had a welder come in and weld it ,it lasted about 6 months and broke again I have two big c clamps a chain and a turnbuckle holding this one up and another one broke a few weeks ago,I FIXED this one the same way.anyone got another way to fix this with out welding or replacing the frame.should I go to a mufler shop shop and get some one who knows how to weld upside down? i've been thinking of just welding the c clamps chain, and turnbuckle on
thanks krudweiser

I got a few that have done this. What I do is drill 2 holes in the bottom of the wire-way and install 3/8" all-thread down to the pillow block. Keep that all thread in stock, you never now when its going to happen.

I've had about a dozen front ends split open over the years. We braze the breaks with a good brass rod. I've seen a few other types of repairs, but I prefer to braze them. We keep a sissor jack and a milk carton case handy. The one thing to be careful about is starting a fire! We wet soak a few old dust catcher cloths and cover the entire area. Before you braze the #10 side, wrap the SA wires inside the frame with wet cloths and a heat shield. I wish I knew of a quicker, easier and permanent repair.

I take it you leave the threaded rod in for ever? do the rods ever break, and do you put more then one in

Ooh - this is great. Had one go down the toilet a year or so ago and replaced it all with OEM. Very costly. We figured any kind of weld would not hold.
Thank you! Will seek out a good welder (I'm sure there's at least one in our leagues).

How embarrasing is it to have a bucket holding up your table? Ugh.

I have had 2 to break in the last 3 years right at the pillow block. Took a floor jack and the old flat sides of the AMF ball racks that had been dis-assembled.They work great for getting the floor jack at the proper height. Welded back in place 2 years ago with no problems.

I have also had one break about a year ago. Brought in a welder and has been holding ever since. The only problem is that I lost 4 Curtain Wall Chassis in the process. Maybe someone will come up with a repair kit that makes it a little easier and less costly.

Quickest repair I've heard of is the threaded rod, but would recommend searching hardware suppliers for grade 8. It IS available and could probably be left in for years or permanently.
My preference, after that repair, is to replace the entire cross beam, when the machine is available for a day or so, and get the old stripped down one welded at a professional shop, with reinforcement inside.
Search for used machines..they're cheap nowadays (some under $900). You'll get motors, switches. table drive, shuttles, torque tubes, and lots of goodies for your older machines. (Maybe I'll start a pinspotter salvage yard).
Store the cross beam with the wire harness in it (rebuild it in the meantime), complete with back end control box.

thanks guys for the info I guess the welder didn't weld mine very good, sorta hard to weld laying on your back unless you do it very often. think I'll stick with the rod and make a few spares. thanks guys

I've been told if you ever do any welding on the machines with amf scorers you should unhook the ground wires from machine frame going to the scoring ground,I guess this might save the curtain wall chassis!??
