We have a lane that drops the sweep after a 1st or 2nd ball cycle..Sometimes it just drops it a little (about right under the mask), & other times (not as often) it drops all the way back to the guard position..To correct this problem we have tightened the brake, changed out the sweep motor 2/3x, & we also changed out the switch. A little help would be appreciated...tia

I saw you have /30 machines and you allready changed the motor/gearbox. I think you allready tried the chassis swap...What about a look in the J-box, sometimes contacts will be pushed out if you change a chassis. Or a bad motor plug can be your problem.
Charles, sounds like one (or both, you never know with 30’s) like you have a bad adjustment or seating at the SA switch or you have a short in the table. Is this a stepper chassis or solid state? Pull the J-26 & 27, that will eliminate the bad wireing, if it still happens then it’s in the SA. Is it constant or every once in a while?
Good luck

charles. have you changed the gearbox or just the stator? it kinda sounds like a gearbox loading problem to me. if it's not my second guess would have to be cr2 contacts.
Si Senor, Derdago, Forte Lorez inaro.
Demainte Lorez, Demis Trux,
Foolacous Andens Andux.
Very possible it could be the plug or the motor cable itself. When I cleaned up all my motor plugs and replaced the cables lots of coast problems just seem to disappear. Like Ed said, check the J-box terminals too.
Charles,
Have you tried setting the SA switch to make the sweep stop either at the highest point of travel or just before? Are the machines 5850 or 6525? If 6525, sounds like a loose gearbox. Also check the lower contacts for the sweep motor in the chassis.
TOON
It's been awhile since I've worked on 30's. But my past experience when doing independent servicing on them is that just because you change the motor or chassis 2 or 3x really don't mean squat. The component is only as good as the person rebuilding them. The only true way when in doubt it to swap parts with a good working machine to see if problem moves and the problem is cured simultaneously. A lot of mech's really don't know how to properly shim a gearbox, or file contacts. (This will defiantly cause a coasting problem)
I have to go with Ed trying the simplest elimination of the K&L.
Since you said you adj the brakes I take it your running 5850's with Stearns. Make sure your sweep stops before zero...It should go up slightly before running its cycle when sitting at a stand still.
The first thing you need to do is to sit on it to determine if the motor stops on a dime every time. (Which it probably doesn’t)...If it does stop dead, then the K&L could "probably be shorted". This is usually a weak pigtail that causes an intermittent prob.
Another place to look is the red wire running from the motor plug to the R? box...for some reason this wire gets pinched more often than not.
K&L....
I thought that was the strike circuit on the table plug going to 26/27 in the J-box...
Or did we get some old stuff from the Americano Maffia Foundation again.
I don't know the relation between this and a malfunctioning motor.
But I'm just a drop out /30 mechanic, little older though.

Hey, whats up Lamp Man!
If your running a stepper chassis a short to ground in the K&L circut will cause the CR-2 to pull in. This happens more often then not on a second ball cycle when the table is spotting pins but... it can happen with either cycle. K&L.... !

I’m a rookie mechanic and have been working on pinsetters for 2 years. One of my lanes has a problem with a sweep possibly coasting. I don’t know what could be causing it...
