  • dist. belt tracking?

ok here's my new problem...we've rebuilt 4 distributors (tore apart, cleaned, painted, and relaced any worn part) no biggie everything looked good. until we threw it in a machine. they all worked well in regards to indexing and such. but for some reason we can't get any of the belt to trck properly. if the dist if fully extended it's fine but as it gets to theback row it tracks all the way to the 10-side and rubs against the track bracket. i've tried bending the tension roller and track bracket in every direction possible but it still does the same thing. we did replace the carriage tube on the index side because all of them were bent. am i missing something here?

Alex....I usually turn the belt around. Most of mine track off some...but you don't want them rubbing.

      Alex,

Make sure the part of the belt where the lacings go are cut straight,if they are not square, the belt will ride to one side

Stupid question, but I'm going to assume you tried repositioning the spring opposite the tension roller... I noticed that you said you bent the bracket, but nothing about adjusting the spring.

Undo the lacer, take the belt off and lay it on the floor next to something straight like a board or a stringer tube... I had a couple belts that stretched more on one side than the other, causing them to get a 'curve' in them... they tracked for $h*t, and I wound up tossing them.

I would definatly check to make sure the belt is cut straight where the lacing is. Everytime I had a belt tracking off to one side it was because it wasn't cut straight.
Give me a hammer and some duct tape and I can fix it!

when you get the belt riding to one side or the other. . .try pivoting the "front frame" of the distributor(make it yawl between the eccentric rollers). and watch the belt miander side to side. shim eccentric rollers accordingly.

                Re: dist. belt tracking?

Another thing to check is to make sure the distributor belt tensioner roller lines up with both rollers on the carriage assembly. If you removed the tube that the tensioner assembly mounts to to paint you may not have lined up the roller properly.

                    Re: dist. belt tracking?

The pulleys are crowned. If you ever run into one that won't track no matter how you adjust the tensioner and everything else is correct, replace or put the crown back in it.
Do you guys run the spacer inside the tube on your idler pulley? The AMF parts manual drawing doesn't show a spacer (item 121) being used inside the tube (item 120), but they indicate 2 spacers are needed. Just wondering. They kinda work with or without it anyways. Just think how many mechanics over the years look at that manual for guidence in putting that thing back together and leave out the spacer because its not pictured. :p

                      Re: dist. belt tracking?

The only time I have has this problem is when I put the Quality belts on. I started using them about 3 years ago. After a year or so they started tracking off to on side. They would be off to the side at the front roller when fully extended and then at the tracking bracket roller when retracted. Changed the belts and new belts are tracking fine.

Just play a little with the link(070-006-109)from the pulley. Bow it a little to the right or left or fasten one side a little bit more to the front or back, did this ALLWAYS cure the problem if the rest was ok.
                        So it goes.
