• strange ball lift problem

on a ball exit I have the ball go up the ball lift on the odd side and it pushes the ball lift belt half off the top pulley then when they bowl on the even side it puts the belt back on the pulley where it should be if they keep bowling on the odd side the belt will stay half off the pulley and not cause any problems.
when the ball goes up the even side it stays right in the center ball lift is centered and start pad and nothing is broken and I have tried moving lift from one side to the other and it doesn't make any difference and the belt is in good shape. I had this happen about 20 years ago and I can't remember what I found.
any ideas. CUJO too much beer I guess!!

Re: strange ball lift problem

Last time I had a problem like that, it was because someone (not me) put the lift together with the wrong belt/sheave combination. AMF has two types of belts and sheaves for the ball lifts: narrow/shallow and wide/deep. If you use a wide/deep belt on a narrow/shallow sheave, the v-groove is higher and thicker than the groove in the sheave, and with a little help from a ball, it will walk up out of the groove and run on the edge of the sheave.

I've also seen a problem like that happen if the tension is too low on the lift, either because it was set wrong, the sheaves were changed from wide/deep to narrow/shallow without readjusting the tension, or because the belt stretched.

Check the tension first... throw a ruler next to the lift-belt tension coil spring...edge-to-edge, the spring should be somewhere around 4-1/2".

If the tension is right, pop the belt and take a look at the groove in the sheave, and the V on the belt... make sure they match.

Although I have not seen it but it would make sence if the lower saddle was not leven and tilted toward the odd side when the ball entered the exit it would move the belt off the pulleys. Its a friction thing.

The first thing I would check is the tension as well....that's where we had most troubles come from

If it is a black Amf belt check the v on the belt
I had 3 or 4 come from Amf with v's that were not
centered.

Re: strange ball lift problem

Is the upper yoke assy twisted to one side or the other? If so, you can easily straighten it by turning the spring collar in the direction of the twist. When you let go of the collar, the spring will try to turn the yoke in the opposite direction. If it won't go far enough, loosen the rail mounting bolts & it should go right into place. If it goes too far, just do the same thing, in the opposite direction.

Also, check the lower track brackets. You might have a loose one.

Re: strange ball lift problem

Check your rail-bracket 000-029-613, is it held to the yoke by 1 or 2 bolts? The older style has one bolt hole and a shorter body to support the bracket the newer has a longer body and 2 bolt holes. The old style allows the yoke to turn easier when a ball goes up the belt.

If it has tits , tires, or says AMF chances your going to have trouble with it.

Re: strange ball lift problem

well the other thing I forgot to mention is this lift has been in for over two years in this pair with no problems until a week ago it has the correct pulleys and plenty of tension on the belt and it's not a amf black belt and it's not the rail. and like I stated before the lift is centered and nothing is cock eyed and the lift rod
cover is in good shape what's funny it jumps half off then back on and doesn't seem to be ruining the V in the belt. the other funny thing is I have a couple of lifts that when the balls go up the lift bounces all over the place and the belt never comes off!!!the bushings are shot in the upper link and it just moves around where it wants and it works like a champ.
or is that a chimp I guess I'M going to try changing the lift, but I hate changing it with all that dust on it,about a inch thick. CUJO. TIME FOR A FEW MORE BEERS AND THINKING.

CUJO, since you seem to have all the obvious covered, could one of the mounting shafts be broken where you can't see it,070-006-325 I have seen this happen before.

I took out the upper link shaft the one that sits on stop bumper and ground it down about a 1/16 where bushings sit so the ball lift bounes around when the ball goes up and now the belt stay on. LOL CUJO
