• Baffling bin switch glitch

Gents:
Have a Solid State chassis w/ X O P board conversion that thinks bin switch is always activated. So after sweep comes through on 2nd ball, then back out to 270,table spots whether or not bin is "full".
Thoughts/suggestions please.
Thanx in advance!

Re: Baffling bin switch glitch

Immediate thoughts that came to mind, try changing the microswitch (naturally) check the wires going to the switch for breaks, bare spots, etc. If nothing there maybe it could be something in the spotting relay in the chassis? (not real sure about how the spotting relay works but bad ones have cause some WEIRD stuff to happen) Try swapping it out with a known good one. Any other advice from true seasoned veterans unlike myself?

I'm with Rep. After checking wires for bad spots, or maybe before, replace SP relay.

Thanks for the backup Magic T. As I said I'm not real familiar with the sp relay. I'm still pretty much a rookie with the machines and dont have much experience with bad sp relays. But I've had maybe 2 go bad on me and it sounded like the kind of problem it would cause. Machines do goofy stuff when the relay is bad, had one that wouldnt spot, one that was spotting on first ball, etc.

peapodd: All those ideas sound good but I think they might be missing the big picture. If you can run your pinsetter without any pins and the table still spots you have a elec. glitch. After checking your bin switch/wires, spot relay and if everything checks out switch chassis with another machine. See if the problem moves. It sounds like a faulty relay on the XOP board. Its not common but with pc boards who knows.

Re: Baffling bin switch glitch

I have quite a few lanes with new wires ran from the switch to the wireway channel.

The wires get old and brittle and they short.

Re: Baffling bin switch glitch

I'm with King on that one... I've had wire insulation die inside the rubber jacket, fall apart, and short. From the outside, it looks fine, even with a problem. Easiest solution, if you even slightly suspect the binswitch wire, replace it... it's a short, fairly simple job that can avoid a bunch of headaches.

Same goes for the switch itself... microswitches run on low voltage have a bad habit of bridging, dropping out, or getting "noisy contacts" after years of use. Signal voltage doesn't have any current to arc the contacts clean by burning off deposits, corrosion, or oxidation, so it builds up and causes problems. If it was a $100 part, I would worry, since it's not, I don't feel too bad about replacing a switch I even suspect might have a problem... Pitch it and replace it.

Re: Baffling bin switch glitch

Being an MP Guy, do those "Wanna-Be-MPs" utilize the capacitor across the BS circuit in the wireway? If so, that might be at fault.

If not, I'll shut my mouth now...

kat, no they dont. take the wires off the bin switch, does it still cycle as if there was a full bin?? im gonna guess (assuming you've tried a new switch) it is shorted where the bin switch cable gets squished & bends to enter the wireway.

Re: Baffling bin switch glitch

When you switch to XOPs your supposed to install the capacitor across the switch to keep it clean. Or so they say.

Sorry for not specifing that I had norrowed this 'glitch' down to a problem IN the chassis!

Spot relay was the culprit!
Good call & thanks again guys!
