• Braincrusher for JJ

What is making the distributor going to the 7 and 10 pin side and not half way to the 4/7 and 6/10? what causes the distributors left/right reach(from total left to total right) and how can you change it and why does it change then?
Others are allso invited.

Re: Braincrusher for JJ

It is sort of a lever action that moves the distributor left to right. When the Dist. Cam pushes down on the cam follower, it sort of pulls on the stationary bolt and pulls the dist. to the left. When there is a dip in the cam, the dist. springs pull the dist. to the right. The spring pressure is from front to back, but the distributor is on a swivel and the springs are off center, so it causes the dist. to turn. I probably just made it more confusing. It's hard to put into words how the distributor moves left to right and I probably didn't use the right words, but I know how it works.

The total reach(from left to right-I don't mean put it in the middle at the #1 ) is factory set but there is a way to increase it.
How And ESPECIALLY why does it work?
LBS owners do have an advantage here.
I make it to easy now!

Add washers behind the safety link for more travel.

Oh, I guess I didn't understand your question quite right. Yes adding washers is how you increase travel BECAUSE:

It increases the length of the thing the rod goes to (don't know the technical name). Which gives more leverage and more travel. IT'S PHYSICS!

This is some sort of evil payback for my Pop Quiz blunder isn't it?

So far I'm thinking about a few things. If you were to look at the distributer from above, centered directly above the big round shaft that it sits on, you could draw an imaginary line going from left to right that bisects the shaft(like standing on a chair behind the machine and looking over the pinwheel with a yardstick laying across the turnpan. The yardstick is the imaginary line.). The smaller arm of the lateral cam follower where it attaches to the safety link falls on that imaginary line and always stays on it no matter what indexing position the distributors at. So if the safety link position is stationary forwards and backwards with the line of the big pivoting main shaft the distributor sits on that must mean the lateral cam follower is pivoting underneath it safety link connection. The pivoting underneath is controlled by the cam and by how far away that stationary safety linkage is from the center of the Big vertical pivot.

So the Left to right swing of the distributor is controlled by the length of the lateral cam follower arms and the stationary pivot point distance to the center of the vertical shaft. When you shorten the distance between the safety and vertical pivot by adding a washer you are multiplying the the swing created.

If you could add enough washer to move the pivot point to the other side of the distributor it would index pins in the opposite order. 1,2,3,6,10 etc..

I'll change my mind tomorrow after I go to work and look at the stupid thing.

I looked at one today. On purpose. And could only think of 1 thing.

Did I oil the lanes this morning?

You are right; decreasing the distance between the center of the special rod end on the safety link and the center of the vertical dist. shaft will increase the swing/reach of the ditributor from left to right, the length of the safety link is only important for centering.
Idexing 1,2,3,6 etc is not possible, adding more rings could end up in only needing one dist. on three lanes
I'm impressed!!

Martin

PS Why is decreasing the distance to the center in this case resulting in a bigger swing and decreasing the distance of the rod end to the center of the crank pulley on the pbl paddle resulting in a smaller swing....?
