• AMF Upgrade for 82-70

Hello, I received a call from a 10 lane 82-70 equipped center that I do service for. They received a brochure from AMF offering a major upgrade for the 70's. New front motors, relocation of b.e. motor, new chassis that controls 2 machines, new backend control box, new counter control that allows you to run different functions of the machine from the counter. Has anyone purchased this upgrade, and if so, what is the cost? Thanks, Mark

don't know what the upgrade costs but we have the upgrade. the be motor is rotated so that pins do not jam into the be motor. i do not think that the new motors are any better or worse. the chassis is nice, how ever you do lose control of the sweep and table via the relays, i.e. you cannot run an interlock out with the new chassis. the mcu at the counter does let you have a little bit more control, off spot cycle can be changed so that the sweep will return to zero. there are other functions i just don't know them off the top of my head.

if your center has good chassis' and motors i don't think that it would be worth it to convert.

The manager at my house was telling us about the XL upgrade, and he said he was told it would drop our maintence from $750 to $175 per machine per year. I think I smell BS. I would like to Know how it's improved or impaired maintenace on those houses that had it installed.

basically your turning your 82-70 into an 82-90XL wanna-be. same mechanics as the 70, but with the electronics (chassis & motors) of a 90.

really IMHO, its not at all needed unless your center has been run by some of the mech's ive followed. If your a military center in which you have to spend money, to have it alotted for next year, go for it.

I dunno about the upgrade....especially the 1 chassis per pair thing. If it craps out, both machines are down. One could easily have some good updated chassis that do the automatic out-of-range thing, auto shut off BE motor, and some other bells, whistles and lights simply by utilizing one of the newer Creative Technology (Now Zot) units. I'm not sure about the new replacement Franklin motors either. From what I've HEARD (note not seen first hand) is that they coast frequently. Repositioning the BE motor due to jams can easily be fixed by adjusting pin feed to prevent such occurences.

In short: One could have a nicely upgraded 82/70 by picking and choosing certain components from different vendors and saving alot of $$$ and using such savings to other projects.

                If it were me.....

                1. Install humpbacks.

                2. Install triggering - Bowltronics behind the sweep.

                3. Install new CTI chassis....with expanders.

                $3000 a pair.

                Happy bowling!

Yes, the Franklins do have braking issues. For the most part they're very good of the ones we have, quiet, dont give us problems aside from the braking. The brakes in them just plain SUCK. Gimme my carbon brushes please

The 70xl chassis are programmable and can interface directly into the scoring system. Troubleshooting machine switch problems are a breeze by watching the lane display lights on the chassis. BTW, chassis sit between the pinwheels so no climbing to swap out chassis. I have swapped a chassis out in under 30 seconds. MCU can also help diagnose chassis problems.

Oops, my bad. Where I work at I haven't seen one fail (we have 8290xl's and 8800 gold's). The buttons on them make it very user friendly and even if it did fail, it's not hard to change one out.

the buttons make it user friendly until they fall off after a couple of months. and i think it is quicker to change a mp chassis then a 90xl. but the 90xl chassis' to have less problems.
