Pulse:

The motors need to be vented. If they are vented and they are leaking, the best advice I can give you is to logon to amf.com and go to the manuals section. In the 90XL section they have a version of the motor manual you can download. It covers many aspects of the motors, including seal replacement. Good Luck.

GMan, I need to quote your "signature", here if you don't mind...

Gearbox leaking? Fear Not! If it's leaking, there's still oil in it... :p LOL!

        Seriously,

I use the blue "Smurf Cum" gasket in a tube. I think it's called "Ultra", or something like that. None of my motors leak after I've rebuilt them. Ya just gotta make sure everything's CLEAN when it goes back together. Wire brush, carb cleaner, plenty of rags.

If I see a motor with ANY oil around it, off it comes, one of my rebuilt ones goes in its place, and back to the shop with it! I do not tolerate leaking motor/GB's!

Franklin motors do not leak. Because they are just that, motors. If anyone knows who makes the gearboxes please post. I have 50 lanes of em and some back end gearboxes leak. We have replaced the seals with one shipped for free from amf. Have found that the input shaft is the one that leaks most often. Am still waiting for more free ones from amf.

Pulse and Mreesser, what type of gear oil are you using?

I run SAE 140/600w that I get from a local jobber. This oil is a pure mineral oil , no sulpher. Gear oil with certain minerals will are not to be used in gearboxes containing bronze parts.

I am like Stuck, I pull any gearboxes that are leaking and fix them. Jerry (King) tops them off or sends them out

Mreesser, what kind of a name is that, initials for something?

Re: franklin b/e motors do they al leak or just mine

We use 80-90/10 sulfur-free gear oil (diesel truck heavy-duty gearbox oil) in our gearheads... we have very few problems with leaks or seals breaking down from it, and it's temprature-resistant, so it lasts w/o thinning, sludging, or breaking down.

Before we started using that stuff, we completely cleaned & flushed the gearboxes with kerosene until they were spotless, then filled them with the new oil, ran them a month, drained them, and refilled them. Been fine ever since.

Most of the seals we get come from a local dealer... they're spring steel with reinforced buna/neoprene, and they wear like iron.

I think it's more about the seals then the oil... the previous 'mech used old, regular motor oil, drained from tractor crankcases... we still had very few problems with leaks or failed seals.

If I had to guess at Mreesr's handle, I'd say it's the shortened version of Mr. E. E. S., Senior... but that's just me.

Very close gman. Mreessr= Matt rees sr. I use the gear oil that amf provided with the instalation. Sounds like I should try the other stuff. Also I found out who makes the gearboxes. Hub city from South Dakota.

Tractors had bronse parts in the crankcases. That mech knew what he was doing. Must have been hard up for money to go with used gear oil though.

I have had the Franklins on since October 01 and have not seen a drop of oil yet. I use the oil AMF provides. Synthetic and runs much cool than regular gear box oil. No noise out of these motors either, backend or combinations.

I think the last seal I had to replace was a backend distributor output shaft seal, about 3 years ago.

I recently had my g/box start leaking after i changed the elevator drive seal. But the leaking seal is the motor input aswell. I didn't even touch that seal and now it is leaking. I would love to pull it back off but they are a real pain in the butt.
