    WTF?

  • #2
    Re: GMans fast BE motors

Well...it ain't what mine look like... ours are just a run-of-the-mill National backend motor/gearbox (with the self-resetting klixon and the "mechanic signal"... you know, the one that when a pin gets wedged between it and the dizzy, it resets itself and keeps the backend running so you can see the smoke from across the house, and you'll know there's a problem. It looks like someone took a 3-way gearbox from something industrial, and mounted it on a 'spotter.

Ya got me by the onions...

It also look dangerous with that universal weldment in the open like that. It should have a shroud over it.

G-Man, I've got the solution to your self resetting klixon. A friend of mine show me this. He built a small box(2x3x.5 or so) and puts a click switch in the middle so the switch sticks out one side. attaches a hinge and hanges it of the back side of the mtr covering the klixon. Attaches the switch into the motor circuit before the klixon. Pin falls off and hits the box and pushes it against mtr depressing switch and shutting off the mtr. You'll get a pin jam call anyway but no smoke signal and added years on the BE mtr. Sorry about the poor explanation, but it works. He made a few at the last house I worked at. They work great. They had GE and Westinghouse mtrs, so the design may have to be modified somewhat but... He is registered here at BT but I can't remember his handle. I'll stop in at house and snap some photo's to show all. It's bound to save some $$ on BE mtrs.

The housing is open on an 82/90 XL BE motor also. I don't even remember a warning sticker.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I got an idea of what you're talking about... I've seen something similar to it... basically it's a killswitch that shuts down the backend if a pin leans on it.

Anyone using those adapter plate assemblies that remount the motor so it's not in-line with the wheel? I can't remember what company brought them out... I think it was a beltdrive system that relocated the motor above the gearbox.
