  • CHASSIS TROUBLE

WE HAVE A 24 LANE HOUSE WITH 82-70 MACHINES, WE ARE 8 LANES DOWN DUE TO CHASSIS TROUBLE. WE HAVE THE OLD 5 BOARD CHASSIS WHICH WAS CONVERTED TO A SINGLE CONVERSION BOARD (MK BOARD?)THE PREVIOUS MECHANIC (S) HAVE RIGGED MOST OF THESE AND THE OWNER IS WILLING TO UPGRADE. WE BOUGHT SEVERAL ULTRA 98 CHASSIS FROM ZOT BUT HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH THEM TOO. (4 OF THEM IN SHOP NOW)WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND REPLACING THE CHASSIS WITH?

    Re: CHASSIS TROUBLE

I find that surprising. I work in a 64 lane center and we send back 2 or maybe 3 MK70's back a year due to failure. A lot of the guys on here (myself included) like the omegatek boards. But if you had bad luck with them I dont really know what to suggest... Guys?
All I want in life is to turn wrenches and climb around pinsetters/pinspotters again :/

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What specific problems are you having with the single boards, and the ultra 98 chassis ?
Have you tried to swap some of the single boards into working chassis ?
Since you have so many chassis problems, my initial thought would be a problem with your C1 plugs ,or a voltage problem . Have you checked the R&amp;S plugs for burned pins? Also, you may have a voltage transmission problem that is causing high or low voltage. If you have experience with electricity, I would be checking voltage at the main panel that feeds the pinspotters.
I have never had a problem with any of the 5 board chassis conversion kits .Ihave used omegatek ,and Lynch. As far as ultra 98, I installed 10 in a 10 lane center.(I also installed new C1 harness assemblies at the same time ). Only had minor problems on one lane. You might want to call PJ at ZOT and discuss the ultra chassis problem with him.

            1. Calm down and hit your caps lock button.
            2. Repair all your C1 &amp; C2 pins and sockets.
            3. When the pin in the chassis is burnt the socket in the corresponding cable end is burnt.
            4. I bet if you repaired all your wiring your problems would go away.

On your chassis question there is a MK-B conversion by OMEGA-TEK- They will install and check the first install to your B's. The best part is you get a life time warranty!!! Call Jamie @ Stahl's 70 952-432-2231---9-4 cst in MN.

                Re: CHASSIS TROUBLE

OK, here goes, on three of the chassis boxes that are down, there is a coat hanger holding the transformer and relays in, there is none of the covers on the chassis (top nor bottom). The bottom line to it all the chassis boxes have been neglected, abused, and damaged!!! 3 of them look like a sledge hammer has been used to repair them, there bent out of shape really bad. As far as checking the C1 and C2 plugs, well been there done that, also i can swap boxes from another lane and it works fine. As far as the Ultra 98 we have called ZOT about the problems, they know there is a problem, there looking into that. The problems were, somehow the ultra chassis is "programming itself". Example, 1st ball only, sometimes, service, and sometimes the aux.power indecators get activated. 2 of the ultra 98 are throwing the main breaker on the chassis box periodically, every 2 or 3 games and getting more often. Any suggestions?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'd be curious to the cause of this as well. I've had 2 Ultra 98 Plus units do this as well. I've verified the wiring over and over and over and everything tests (yes, tests) okay. If it didn't throw the CB on the side of the unit, it would blow the Spot/Pit 10A fuse. 1 Unit went so far as to turn my C1 harness (at the Chassis plug) into one of those July 4th sparkly things that kids hold on to. All in all, no other problems with them.

                    Wingnut,

I don’t have any experience with “Ultra” chassis so I can’t help you there but I do have experience with Omega-Tek chassis &amp; I like them. They’re close enough to the SS chassis that they don’t confuse you like an MP chassis might. Everything is modular. If a C-1 blows up, you just pull it out &amp; put in your spare. Takes about 30 seconds. (OK, maybe 60) They have both styles of mask plugs &amp; they’re made for the MK-70 board that you already have. They also have a slot for the expander if you want to use them. Contact Omega-Tek for info.

Before I started working full time, we had lots of chassis problems. When I went full time, 2 ½ yrs ago, I spent the better part of 4 months rebuilding &amp; replacing C-1 &amp; C-2 A blocks, strain relief brackets &amp; eliminating spliced wires. The only problems we’ve had since then are worn out tbl &amp; swp contacts. If you’ve gone thru your C-1 &amp; C-2-A plugs thoroughly, you’ve eliminated 90% of your trouble. If you used gold pins &amp; sockets in the C-1 you can bump that to about 95%.

Major chassis overhauls aren’t fun. Good luck.

                      Re: CHASSIS TROUBLE

I agree, the Omega Teks MK-70's are a wonderful way to upgrade the s/s chassis. These aren't the AMF/Creative tech "XOP" boards are they? If so, toss them and get Omega Tek MK-70's. The transformer brackets get broken a LOT, usually when the chassis is shipped with loose screws hoding them. I use small angle brackets to repair them. Also, the aftermarket replacement contacts for the old style (open frame) A/B contactors just plain suck. It would be worth it to use the newer style contactors available rather then putting new contacts on the A/B's (unless you are fortunate enuff to have original replacement contacts! I rebuild these things all the time and all the info. listed so far is right. Bad C1's are the biggest problem you can have. If you want, I can rework them to work like a new chassis!

We've had nothing but success with MK70s... Omega-Tek's support is excellent, and the products are rock-solid. They even upgraded our older boards (that didn't have interface pins on them) when we got our EX scoring interface boards.

                        I'd recommend 'em to anyone.

thanks guys for all the info, we have finally got the owner to realize he is going to have to let go of some dough. We are looking at replacing all 24 chassis boxes, with what im not sure yet. Does anyone know anything about the super star chassis? I do know that AMF makes this chassis and zot makes the ultra 98 which is junk. We have had 1 super star for about a year and a half, with no trouble (knock on wood). I really like the controls that the superstar offers especially the pindication, it makes finding strike cycle problems alot easier. I think when we do make this upgrade we are going to mount the chassis to the wall some how to prevent so much vibration. thanks again guys
