Anyone in chicago area survive the weather tonight ? We did'nt. Lost four xl 90 chassis . The power worx conditioner must have helped a little. Last time we lost sixteen chassis all at once. What a fun couple of days that was.

Did this occur as a result of blackout, brownout, or surge, etc??

      Re: weather

No blackout,no brownout, had to be a surge. I wasn't there for this. Last time I was and lightning hit so close it scared the **** out of me. We have surge supressors and power conditioners but these 90 chassis are super sensitive. Usually fry the two com chips on the logic board.

Wow, hope you can get those replaced quickly. Lightning scares the **** out of me too, LOL!

The only storm related problem I ever had was about 5 years ago when we had a brownout and a Sur-Pic motor caught on fire.

The first thing I go for in a blackout or a brownout are the circuit breakers.

          Re: weather

Keep one thing in mind... electronics and lightning don't mix at all. If lightning hits within 75-100 feet of an electronic device, it can be damaged whether it's connected or sitting in a closet boxed up. Lightning gives off such a huge pulse of EM radiation, that it can cause circuits to 'generate' a charge that can damage them. And the more sensitive the equipment, the more likely it is to be damaged.

As I post this, there's actually a hell of a thunderstorm heading in... kind of ironic, ain't it... Guess I better disconnect the 'puters and the DSL.... naah, I have insurance...

I replaced the two comm chips , u5 and u6 on the logic boards on two of the damaged boards and they work ok but the camera that use only for pinsensing is not responding. Anyone know what ic chips control the camera on v2.12 xl-90 logic boards ?

WOW 16 chassis at the same time Glad I never have had anything like that happen. I must be lucky, As I never hardly had any trouble from lightning.

We lost 5 MP boards in our chassis and 8 lanes were locked on instruct-o-mat from damaged board in accuscore system, from a very close lightning strike.

                    Re: weather

Yea... I remember that thread. I dunno... I guess it's not impossible, but I still can't believe that a leaf blower throws off enough EMR to damage a circuit. Stranger things have happened, though.

I know the current draw on them is high enough to cause a potentially damaging sag/surge condition in the mains line it's connected to.

I remember when I was a kid, we were coming home from someplace with my dad in our chevy van during a thunderstorm... we stopped at a red light, and while we were sitting there, lightning hit a telco pole about 8-10' from where we were stopped. Every vehicle close to the intersection stalled right out... radios blew out, cars unfortunate enough to have electronic engine systems at the time couldn't get started or had problems running afterwards. And the NOISE it made when it hit was indescribable... our ears rang for at least a day after. I like lightning and thunder... it's cool to watch a storm, but that really isn't an experience I'd like to repeat.

                      Re: weather

I LOVE thunderstorms! I've had the crap knocked outta me three times from lightning ! In case anyone ever wondered about my "id" on bowltech, I am a ham radio operator. I have a ton of aluminum in the air at the house and live in a wooded area to boot. Been within 10 feet of direct hits twice, once on an island on the outter banks while "on the air"...I saw it tracking my way & *BAM* it hit the sal****er pond about 10 feet away. I was blinded by it for a few minutes and my right arm was numb for over an hour (I had the microphone in my hand at the time). What is strange is nothing got zapped (electronics), my radio, laptop, and amplifier were all OK, but I got the crap knocked outta me ! I still go outside whenever there is a storm & check out the light show....I must be nuts, but it is AWESOME! ALSO, lightning is a good source of revenue for me repairing the damaged CWC's, MP's, etc. Your best bet is to shut everything down, UNPLUG it all, and wait it out. Of course, that isn't practical, but that is the best thing to do...Some of the local house's swear I've put lightning rods on top of their centers... ...It's a thought...HA!
