Static electricity? Useless? only used because I'm told to, not by choice!
They have one benefit, if some grease or oil substance gets to the carpet, they evenly distribute it across entire carpet instead of infected area! Did I leave out they suck?
It's been awhile but I have much more to share!!!

            Re: carpet brushes

Carpet brushes can't hurt, but are not really necessary. I have 82-70's with 3 year old crap pins while my goodies take a rest. Both sets are white.

So long as you clean the bins and cups, and all else that gets to the pins, you need not to have ball wipers. Clean the entire machine 2 times a year, and you will have no complaints.

The only practical use I’ve found for them, is that they make nice brooms for sweeping under the machines.

Yea, if you attach a broomstick or mop handle to them, they do make good push brooms.

As for being mounted on machines, no thanks. They were great for building up static and wearing a ditch in the carpet.

We had them for a very short while, back when I started out... I actually think the machines stayed cleaner with them OFF... Like dewbowler said, they would evenly distribute dirt, oil, and fuzz across the carpet.

We've been living quite well for years without them. They're kind of like AMF's version of your appendix... not required to live, don't notice when it's gone... but if it causes problems, it REALLY causes problems.

i have carpet brushes on most. i do as thelegend does, and tap them outside once a month. cant use carpet brushes on an AMF green split finger, the brush will rip it to shreds inside of a year, i know.
