90XL chassis

I have the 90Xl with the black chassis with no lcd screen, not the same as 8290xl.

I keep getting the same problem with them. basically the odd lane will suddenly start to get bad sweep overrunn and it will interlock all the time, i have through lack of a spare wound out the interlock cam switch a bit to allow it to run but after a while it finds a new fault, on respot cycle the table comes down and picks up the pins but then it just seems to forget to bring them back down???

Up to know its all been covered by the warranty so i have just been sending them for repair but that is going to cost me a fortune now so i need to know how to fix it myself or at least if i can.

I worked on 70's before with MP chassis and they were reasonably simple to fix but i opened up one of these for the first time today and i was lost.

Right now i have 2 lanes out and 2 chassis with the same fault (they came off differant lane pairs) it frustrates me that there must be a way of swapping one part from one to the other so i have 1 good chassis but i dont know what is what inside!!

The AMF manual that comes with it is of no use i was wondering if anybody has a technical manual of these chassis that labels everything inside so i can sit down and figure these things out!!

Any help at all would be appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, much like their scoring, there are "no user servicable parts inside." I hope I'm wrong.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hard to tell, with AMF, I have found that they like to say that so you will send your parts to them for repair long after the warrantee is up. The CWC's for Accuscore supposedly had no serviceable parts in them, but as the power supplies went bad, you could either send them back to AMF, pay $300 for repair, or go to a local video game store and buy the same thing for about $25. You just cant learn that until the warrantee actually expires....

Talking to the IG's (important guys) at AMF a while back, I found out that the 90XL chassis has a triac to run each motor that is at best borderline for the current being drawn. They were supposed to have improved them in the near future, so you might want to check with them about updating your chassis.

Another fault: when the machine goes into table/sweep interlock, the regenerative braking system is bypassed, meaning the table and sweep coast to a stop. Results: sweep links locking onto the table stamping at the back. This is caused not by a device, but rather programming in the main chip in the chassis. This, too, was supposed to be upgraded soon.

Whoa...The inside of the 90xl chassis kinda reminds me of the inside of a high voltage box on a GS-10....Thanks for posting the pics Welby.I now have an idea of what I'll be facing when our warrantee runs out.

It sounds like the sweep braking circuit is not working intermittently, causing the sweep to sometimes not brake.

I am not familiar with that chassis, but it looks like it has solid-state contactors and possibly has the start switches in it as well. I can't quite read the writing, but the two flat black boxes with a small wire plug and four quick-connect terminals look like solid-state contactors, but I don't know where the start switches would be. You can probably tell if you trace out the motor power circuit (start with the capacitors) and write it all down.

Anyway, if there's intermittently no braking, it is likely to be either the NC (brake) 'contacts' on the solid-state contactors, or a faulty start switch. A faulty start switch would possibly cause faulty starting too (not sure if you've seen that happening with these as well).

They look fairly simple to swap over, so just swap the ss contactors and ss switches to the oppose lane (one at a time) and see if you get a difference.

My spare is off for repair and the other 2 are still on lanes so they can run the other pinspotter but as soon as the spare comes back and i have one to play with i will try the things you have said.

I am guessing that you have measure the MFD in the braking capacitor. I think that would be the place to start.

Just an update on this. Have tried changing the SS contactors and it was still the same, i now have 2 chassis like this. Has anybody figured out this problem??

Also i really need to find somewhere that can repair them as AMF are just not interested.

the problem is the relays in the chassis. don't know if parts are available.

they look the same as the 8290 1st generation which i use,ive had the same problem,i found that it was the solid state relays,you can get tham from -QIS

There is a company close by that claim to be able to repair anything electrical. They repaired a C90 board for us once, which AMF said wasn't worth repairing.

I'll email you the details if you want bud, but they were a tad expensive. Thing is with them, if they identify an obscure part and it's faulty they'll locate one.

Personally with the cost of a chassis, I'd be a little cautious before letting someone have a free hand with it.

One other thing, where you mention the machine fails to put the pins back down on respot. As I'm not familiar with your chassis/electrics just wonderend if there was something in your off spot circuit that could be faulty. If you remember that's like what a 70 does when you have an off spot. Table stops at the top with the fingers closedsweep stays at guard. When you have a faulty one table stop with pins in fingers, sweep stays at guard. But you have auto reverse on yours for off spots. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree
