  • Extra Distributor Spring

    Rx

If you have had trouble with the distributor self indexing as it goes to the 5 or 6 pin, or if you have had a trip rod that was a little lazy in returning to its down position, here's a simple fix for it. Take a spring from a newer style Phoneix pad machine, part #153-2740, and attach it around the stop blade and hook the other end to the opening in the pan. The little bit of extra tension will keep the distrbutor from bouncing at the 5 and 6 and also help pull the trip rod up. This little bit of spring tension has no real effect on the operation of the distributor.

Where did you get that stop blade?
The problem is usually harder to find than to fix.

The stop blade is an envirobushing. Ed Fox from EBN Services sells them. I do not see the need for this spring. What adjustment are you unable to make that you would need this spring installed? If the Distributor is self indexing at the five pin, you can gently bend the bracket that the trip rod connects to, to line it up perfectly with the stop blade. Obviously you want to try to adjust your rollers first, but if the tubes are bent, my fix will work without installing a spring.

if the distrubutor is adjusted properly you do not need that spring. Had one bounce at the 5, adjust roller done away with the problem. instead of shortcuts fix the problem the right way first

This spring is needed with a trip cable.

If you have the old style rod it is not needed.

However, on several of ours, the tension on the torsion spring is lowered by 1/4 of a turn through use of a bent nail (urg! I hear them cry!) which presumably would make the bounce effect worse (less tension to push the rocker down).

I usually solve double-tripping by adjusting the trip rod, removing those bent nails from the torsion spring, and rarely the bend-the-support-bracket job.

                        Andrew,

I have, on practicly every cable dist I have rebuilt over the last few years, bent the tab on the coil spring (rocker shaft) to reduce that pressure. Been working well for me for about 4 years now.

The rod pushes the trip lever down.

                          The cable buckles.

                            Re: Extra Distributor Spring

The stop blade is a Enviro Bushing split stop blade (Part #n 56041T). I've reworked the blade in a couple of ways also. Been running Enviro blades since 2000 with very little trouble and NO lubrication. The reason for the spring on the blade was to give the trip rod a little extra pull up. The tension from the spring is not that strong, but it will help if it's needed. Even if everything is set up properly, the rod can be lazy comming up. Even with a new spring on the rod, it still is far from where it is doing its job. The spring is right there to help out. The idea of this mod was to give someone another idea of what could work if needed.
