  • Kickback phenolic glue

Was curious what has worked and not worked for anyone who has replaced the phenolic panel on a side support....brown composite plate onto GSX woodish support.

A good contact glue has always worked for and also use nails.

Welwood contact cement. BUT You have to roll 2 coats onto the back of the phenolic plate. The exposed burlap will soak the first coat and it will NOT stick. One coat will do on the wood. And - make sure there are NO voids behind the new plate or it will break there. Finish with a short deck screw countersunk around the edges. At least one in each corner and 2 more across the top/bottom. Id also suggest one in the center of the front and back edges. No need for any other fasteners on the plate.

Yes, do not use the water base. Use the good stuff, may as well enjoy the fumes for a few min. I have found, some last 3 years, some 6. I put two coats on both pieces. I drill a dozen holes around the edge to put pressure on it. Leave overnight, and take screws out in morn.

Was looking for how to make those things stick, I tried with contact glue but I did not double dip the plate. Time to sniff some more glue I guess!

What I found worked best - besides using the weldwood glue -- was cleaning the kickback with some alcohol and making sure there were not any chunks of old stuff left. I used a putty knife scraper to get the old build up off as well.
Doing the coat on the kickback with a paint brush then coating the phenolic panel made it so I did not have to use any extra things to keep it in place -- once it was there, it was there. I also made sure that there was no bowling on that lane for at least eight hours.

You can rough up the kickback with a wire wheel on a drill, then put 2 coats on, as it is a porous surface.
