We all know what a PITA changing the cable is if the special tool is not available. Yesterday I stumbled upon an easy way to do it and thought I would share it here in case it might help someone.
Needed are a claw hammer, good sturdy vise, and small size needlenose vicegrips. Also needed is the part with at least some cable protruding.
Clamp the housing in the vise such that the pin is horizontal and the slots are exposed beyond the jaws of the vice. Get the vicegrips set so that they will lock on to the housing on the slotted end. Tie a couple of loops in the cable as close as possible to the housing. Then catch the cable with the claw end of the hammer and lever it on the vise, compressing the spring. Hold it there with one hand while locking the vicegrips against the spring with the other.
You will now be able to remove the pin, change the cable, and replace the pin.
