  • Deck shift

I usually read former posts on subject before I post. I forgot how to bring up past subjects to read. I have no mind anymore. Deck will only shift part way. Will not set pins and causes deck jam when back to zero. I have checked the normal things. Broken bolts, spotting fingers, scissors, geneva plates, rollers, and cables. I can make it shift by force. It sounds like it is coming from the 7 pin side, the snag. Will keep on looking. Thanks to all.

Try taking off one geneva plate and try to shift deck. You may have a warped deck. If it still does not work try the other plate but you must put the other plate back on first or you will loose the spring tension and possibly cause injury when the second plate whips around.
Sometimes we have to do stuff to get by....Just go back and do it right when the "by" has passed!!

Needle bearings on moving deck shaft might be dry.

Go down to 270 setting new pins. LOTO. Carefully unhook the deck cable and try to let the deck shift all the way manually. If it goes smoothly then the problem is not with your deck. Then you should look to the moving deck cam follower and your bearings on the pulley shaft. Once you go down and do this I think you will be able to narrow it down. If your deck ends up being warped, Brunswick makes a deck right kit that works pretty nice.

A easy way to check for a warped deck is to put a yard stick or a 4 foot light bulb on the rear of the deck. You will be able to see how much it is warped.

At 300 degrees the geneva rollers will be straight up and down. check your cam clearance by lifting on the corner of the deck. If no clearance the deck is warped.

Scissors do not close when deck is trying to set pins. Will check ball cranks, now that I know what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Took 3rd attempt to locate hangup. Deck will not shift last 2 inches to release pins to deck. Is it possible that I lost the spring wrap while pulling hard on the cables? Noticed the rollers were out of their slots on geneva plates. Got back in, and it looks just like machines on either side of it. The position of the deck cable pulleys that is. Still have a snag someplace even with cable off. Way to old for this. We do not need the machine right now, but I am on a mission. If I have to wrap spring, how and how much? Thanks again.

Leave the cable on and remove both geneva plates. With this done the deck should slide back and forth with ease. If not you have a bolt sticking out some where.

Does the cable go slack when this happens?

Remove both geneva plates and pull the cable off of the pulleys. The spring should suck the lower cable all the way in to the fittings and still have some pressure on it. By pulling on it you'll be able to feel is something is wrong. The lower cable could be frayed inside the tube. The torsion shaft could be binding due to lack of lubrication.

BTW, the only thing that holds the torsion shaft in place are the fittings on the ends. If the roll pin on the ten side bearing holder is gone, the shaft will work it's way to the left and you'll definitely have a major bind.
