  • No tap strike

Hi all, recently started our summer no tap league. On a few of our lanes after a bowler throws a 9 the lane will reset the pin for the second shot instead of sweeping. What do I need to adjust for the lanes to recognize a n

First of all, make sure that when this happens that the scoring system is scoring a no-tap strike on the score screen. If it is, then you probably have 1 or 2 things causing the problem. Either your new pins solenoid isn't working correctly or at all or the cycle link may not be connected to the standing pins cam follower in the detector. It's pretty common for the cycle link to come loose from that cam follower. The cycle link is the part that sticks up out from the rear part of the detector. Grab the top of that link and if you can move it forward and back, it most likely has come loose down below. The new pins solenoid is another issue. That is located in the box mounted right in front of the detector with the link coming out of it that connects onto a selector in the detector. There is a small p.c. board in there that has a relay on it. The relay is prone to failing and then you're new pins function doesn't work 'cause the solenoid isn't getting the signal to pull in. If the p.c. board or solenoid is bad, there would also not be a switching to second ball for any tenth frame fill balls. So if you notice that problem on any of your problem lanes, then you should probably start with the N.P.S. box, p.c. board first. Try swapping the p.c. board with one from a lane that you know is working right and then you'll know if it's the board or not.

Scoring shows a no tap strike as it should, also sweeps standing pins after 10th frame second ball as it should

if it is sweeping the pins on the 3rd shot in the tenth frame then it would be that cycle link that stripperbolt stated. we had 7 lanes that the cycle link had popped loose. now my question to all is i have ask scoring and in no tap it wont sweep the remaining pin when a no tap strike is thrown. it scores the strike but wont sweep the pin. all of our cycle links are connected and all of the new pins selenoids are working as they should.

Usually, and during no-tap, the main cause of failure to sweep dead wood is the new pins solenoid. In many of my experiences, the solenoid coil has gone bad. Next is a failure of the relay in the NPSK box. Third would be that the NPSK solenoid link has come off of the standing pins selector. (This is the selector you push forward when respotting pins.) Last on the list would be any interconnecting electrical wire or cable could be broken, loose or not connected.

When the scoring system detects and records a 9 pin strike, it sends a signal to the NPSK (new pins solenoid) to fire. This, in turn, shifts the detector from first ball to second ball, and before the pinsetter has a chance to cycle. In second ball cycle, the pinsetter operates normally by sweeping any standing and fallen pins, and spots a new set of pins.

I doubt that this type of system works with an unmodified model A pinsetter, due to the pinsetter's overtravel function; unless the gearbox has been modified to operate from zero to zero, as many scoring systems require.

Do you have auto-OOR kits installed on your machines? If your OOR adjustment or auto-OOR are not adjusted properly, machine will allow deck to lower to pick up pins for normal second ball cycle. Just a thought.

Yes, Steve, Frameworx uses the NPS. Vector does not.

dealt with this one quite a few times, the 2 things i find most often are either the dipswitch in the CCD processor isnt set to the brunswick A/A2 10 pin/no tap setting,or the 2 springs on the standing pins selector arent the correct size.

Pretty much anytime I had this problem where the NPS would switch machine to 2nd ball for the 10th frame fill ball, but machine wouldn't sweep single pins in 9 pin no-tap or sweep pins on first ball foul and set new rack, it's been that cycle link had come loose in the detector.
