  • gear box , 2:1 noise ????

gear box makes noise when pinsetter lowers and raises the deck ...the noise is hard to describe ...its not a grinding noise or anything it just sounds like its working harder than it should ....could this be caused by the worn shaft it sounds weird when its cycling even when the deck isnt moving but the noise is accentuated when the deck goes up and down ??? any help would be great ....thanks !!!

Could be a lack of lubrication on the bronze eccentric ring on the 2:1. That would be the fastest, and easiest thing to rule out. If the noise is coming from the 2:1 assy. If it seems to be coming from the worm shaft/ clutch area of the gearbox then you might have a bad bearing in the worm shaft. When A bearing in the worm shaft starts to wear it makes a "groaning" noise, at first it is only when the machine pulls the moving deck up. As the bearing continues to wear the "groan" gets worse.

I would also lean toward the worm shaft bearing. When it is under a load like lifting the deck, the growl will get worse. Bearing that goes bad is usually the outer bearing on the worm shaft. It is the farthest from the supply of oil and will usually go bad first.

Its also the only thing that keeps the worm from unscrewing itself from the worm wheel, which is why its a radial load bearing. It won't feel bad when removed unless one puts a load against it while turning it.

Very true...many bad bearings that I take off feel just fine when spun by hand.
