  • machine not turning on from desk / cash register

I have Jap A2's in my center with AS-90s. I have a problem where the lane doesn't turn on from the front desk / cash register terminal. I can bump it on from the back of the machine & the old front desk switches before auto scoring was installed.

If I go down back I can hear the 24v relay chattering and it doesn't have enough juice to pull in the 100v relay. Once the 24v is pulled in, the machine runs fine. Changed the 24v relay & rectifier, but the problem hasn't went away

    Anyone have any ideas?

What you are no doubt seeing is a voltage drop across the wiring from the pinsetter to the scoring system. What style AS system do you have? Source Command, Command Network or something else. Odds are the the LIU connection has degraded and causing the voltage drop.

Let's start by checking some voltages. With the electrical box cover off and the pinsetter motor unplugged...measure the voltage from TS2-6 to TS2-9. This will give us our base voltage...what we should see by the time it makes it to the motor start relay coil. Once you have this voltage, try to turn the pinsetter on from the desk. Hopefully the issue will present itself. This will allow us to measure the actual problem if it does...but even if it doesn't, we can still see a voltage drop if it is there. Next, measure the voltage at the following points.

TS2-9 to TS2-6 (yes...we are reading this again to be sure there isn't a voltage supply issue at the transformer)
    TS2-9 to TS2-5
    TS2-9 to TS2-3
    TS2-9 to TS2-2
and the coil of the motor start relay.

Post your results here and we should be able to figure out what is happening.

If it ends up that the voltage drop is occurring across the connection at the may need to replace the connection or if it is bad enough...the entire LIU. The reason this usually happens is because the current for the entire low voltage system of the pinsetter (except the TDM) runs through the LIU. This current draw can be lowered by using a "buffer" relay. This relay can prevent further damage to the connections and you can install in the other lanes to prevent them from doing the same thing.

You probably have a bad lane relay on the LIU board.

With taking the readings at ts2-9 - ts2-6, 5, 3, 2 & coil, do you want me to take it when the 24v relay is chattering or when the pinsetter is running at full power?

Both if you can. Just be sure the pinsetter motor is unplugged if it is chattering.

          Let's see what you get.
