We have discussed this issue a few times in the past. One of the things that really struck home with most is pit height relative to the ball wheel. The higher the pit is in relation to the ball wheel...the better the transfer is for the ball getting to the ball wheel. If the ball is grabbed too soon by the ball wheel...or actually the kicker that most mechaincs use these days...the more apt it is to get under the elbow or even ride the front lift rod by itself and then the ball falls off the lift rod onto the pit cushion.

I like to raise the pit high enough so that there is 1/16th inch between the ball and the pit conveyor when the ball is on the ball wheel (not on a kicker though) and the pit conveyor is all the way to the rear. This puts the pit as high as possible without the pit conveyor hitting the ball when the upper pit frame is in its most rearward position. You can accomplish this in two ways...you can raise the rear of the pit by shimming under the rear of the lower pit frame...or you can lower the elevator frame by removing shims.

With that being said...if you are seeing this issue...check your pit mounts. If you use the single piece urethane version, they can be sagging. This will cause the upper pit frame to lower in the rear. If you use the metal piers with the rubber mounts...they could be destroyed...again, lowering the pit frame.

Let us know what you find.

Steve nailed it! Although I like a slightly larger gap than 1/16". Remember any time the lift rods are changed, or adjusted this gap will change! (which is why I make it slightly bigger than 1/16") Remember: if you have SBE's they should be adjusted AFTER the lift rods. SBE's that are set too low can cause the same problem.
