  • 4:1 Disassembly

I have a 4:1 that needs a new worm gear. I've tried getting the old one off the shaft with my 12 ton shop press without any luck. Does anyone know what size press I will need or at least have a different method that is effective? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Soak it in wd-40 then try again.

Other than that, I've used a hydraulic pulley puller, but the press should be able to handle it.

when you get gearpuller on it as tight as you can...then hit the end of puller stud hard with a 3lb. hammer coulple hits ota get it popped to pull fairly easy from there.

Are you trying to pull both gears at the same time? You should pull the spur gear first...then the worm wheel.

Did you take the spacer off of the end of the shaft along with the O-ring?

Lastly...if you can not get the gear off when using the press...set it up so the pressure is trying to pull the worm wheel...then add heat from an oxy-acetylene torch to the worm wheel. This will expand the worm wheel and it will pop right off.

make sure you wear proper eye protection when using a press or puller. ive done plenty of press work and things can break very easily.

Yep...happened to me one time. It was so loud the owner came running to the back wondering what the heck happened.

some people may think pOP IS A JOKE BUT they really will make a loud pop noise when they break loose from being set there for years on end.

I know its coming when I do one of these...and it still scares the crap out of me. LOUD and sudden. No joke...but we all laugh about it after the pop.
