  • 2 5 pins

Ok guys, what causes 2 5 pins in the 5 pin deck chute? Frustrating at times.

    A few possibilities:

    Pin sticking in the bucket.

Check deck roller and spotting fingers.

Make sure the deck pad is around the right way.

5 pin chute rubbing on the halo ring causing 'half an index' after the 5 pin. This usually results in a second pin down the chute and into the 5 pin bucket. In this situation, the turret will complete the index to the 9 pin position by the time you get to the machine so the cause of the jam isn't immediately apparent.

On a side note, I had an interesting problem on a machine today. It was at 180 degrees, waiting for pins with all the pins in the buckets and 2 pins in the 5 pin (the 2nd one was still in the chute because the deck was up, of course).

I found the projection on the turret cam was almost right off the edge of the roller at the front of the long link and occasionally it wouldn't make contact at all. When that happened, the projection on the turret cam would 'jam' temporarily on the front of the long link causing a half index after the 5 pin and a second pin to go down the chute. Then, after a few seconds, it would 'unjam' and index to the 9 pin.

And, because the long link wasn't being pushed back far enough (due to the cam projection missing the roller), the long link wasn't locking back and the machine would wait for pins when the deck was full. After some careful bending of parts, all was well again.

      Agreed.

I'll add that a miss placed oil pan can also restrict the movement of the long link with the same results.

        All good points Carl.
Something else to check is the full deck restricted drop. If there is a bind ANYWHERE in this area, Including the area Kanga mentioned, the long link will find it hard to push back and will stall the turret from completing the index. With the machine up at zero, power off and cord removed, the deck empty, try pulling the long link rearward from under the cross conveyor. In all fairness, the rearward action should be nearly effortless. The only tension you should feel will be from the small but very strong (and hard to replace) spring connected to the bottom of the full deck blocking finger.

If there is restriction, there could be the issue Carl was referring to

Long Link Roller.jpg In the first place, this pivot arm should not be in contact with the indexing cam. (click photo for close-up) In this photo, this was due to a missing rubber bumper that should be on the long link. Second, as you can see in the photo, the roller and the link are reversed. This roller should be below the link so it will ride more in line with the projection of the cam. And last, make sure the pivot arm stud is not bent. Unfortunately, these bend very easy especially where there are deck jams in the 5-pin bucket.
        Good luck my friend.

Note to Kanga... You beat my post as I was writing. How dare you!!!LOL

did you check the pin gate to make sure that it locking? also check to make sure it isn't bent where the pin can ride over the top of the pin gate.
