  • Pin on the turret

I have a lane where a pin will lay across the turret instead of dropping into the wires. The conveyor belts do have a few small sections missing. could this be my problem? I'm going to swap them on the pair and see if the problem moves. Anything else to look for? It only happens once every 3-4 days, so sitting on it is not showing me anything, and I have too many other fires to put out to sit on it all nite.

Check the pin gate adjustment. The pin gate latch should "lock" when the neck of the pin passes over the pin gate lever. If this adjustment is not correct the pins bunch up and the second pin in the cross conveyor contacts the first pin and prevents it from falling into the turret wires properly.

      Thanks Mike. I'll do that.

As you check your pin gate ADJ. you should also do a close inspection of your indexing roller.

As the indexing roller and pin gate work together if the roller is worn it will cause pin gate problems.

Go with what works and not what the book says.

What pin position does the pin end up on the turret? The most common for this issue is the 9. This is caused by one of two things. One being what is already mentioned...which can get it to occur at other positions...usually the 3 or the 4 as these will get the pins to back up on the cross conveyor and have the hardest time with a pin gate that is not locking at the neck of the pin. The other reason this can occur...and only at the 9 is the tension on the long turret drive belt. If the tension is too loose, the turret will hesitate as it tries to index past the 5...and the next pin (the 9) can "ride" the turret wire and land on top of the turret.

          Hope this helps a bit...

I removed the pin gate, replaced the worn pin, cleaned it up, removed the strap and put a new one on. I set the adj to the 1/8 to 3/16 below the pin and I still have the problem. Steve, it's always on the 4 pin. I will check the indexing roller todad.

This is not the adjustment we are speaking of. You need to be sure the pin gate locks as the neck of the pin passes over the pin gate lever. With the machine off (LOTO), push a pin slowly over the pin gate while watching the white roller on the bottom of the pin gate. As the belly of the pin goes over the pin gate...you will see the white roller will go to the rear of the pin gate latch...then as the neck of the pin approaches the pin gate, you will see the white roller move back toward the front of the pin gate latch. The roller must make it to the curved cut-out in the front of the pin gate latch and allow the pin gate latch to lower...thus locking the pin gate at that point. This must happen at the neck of the pin...not after the head of the pin passes over the pin gate. If it does not lock as needed...carefully bend the pin gate down some and try again.

Hope that helps as this can be a stubborn issue...

Check the bolts in the indexing cam. If its sagging because the bolts are loose it may not lock also.

Steve's point is valid. And the adjustment is to bend the gate it self.

Ah, gotcha. I will look at that when I go back in saturday. Thank you for the info, and Jim, cam bolt are tight.
