  • rake shaft replacement

hi all, i have to change a rake shaft. i have changed a few of them out with a 3 peice before, but not a 1 piece, whats the easiest way to install a 1 piece rake arm assembly? i know i will have to take off the turret support rods and anything else in the way. just looking for suggestions

    thanks in advance

ive supported the turret on a 2x4 rested across the top of the deck before so i can remove the turret supports (probably frowned upon by some, but have done it.) obviously, you would need to cycle to 180 before hand to remove the x-washer on the spring tube. the only other large obstacle (beside some possible wires) would be if you had early machines with front mounted electrical boxes.

      Have somebody around to help.

I remove the microswitch at the rear of the turret frame to prevent excessive pressure on it due to the removal of the support rods.

Also pay attention to the latch at the back of the turret. It's the one that the roller on the deck lift shafts contacts at 270 new pin setting to clear the full deck signal. If you lower the front of the turret too far you can bend this latch. If you remove the micro-switch and this latch you can just let the turret hang when you undo the nuts for the turret supports. Also make sure you have the giant spring tube secured well. I like to use a piece of 3/8 threaded rod.

jack this is what we did, old one came right out, new went right in. everything went pretty well, a couple hiccups here and there with bad spacers and oilites.

          thanks for the help

Nothing wrong with supporting the turret with the deck. Makes it easy to wind down the deck to get the proper clearance to remove the rods... especially if you have steel turret frames.
