How do you tell the difference between the Japanese and American rakes?

  • #2
    Their accent.

    Sorry, couldn't resist...

You're talking about the rake assemblies? I wasn't aware of anything significant other than one seems to crack more than the other.

LOL , The sell two different rake repair kits for the rake assemblies. I was wondering if there was a visual difference between the two.

Oooh, now I gotcha... it's the internal diameter. Japanese is 32mm from memory and US is 1-1/4".

So you really won't know until you break one.

There might be some minor difference, but I only have US machines in my home centre and none from the other Japanese centres to compare. There's likely a difference, I just don't know of it.

              Steve will I'll bet.

This is not scientific, but if you have Jap A-2 machines then you probably have the slightly different in diameter sweep shaft arms. They looked the same to me visually, but then I have never seen them side by side! Also, the Jap ones have probably already been repaired by now!

the diameter of the rake arms are the only differences. but actually prefer the zot rake shaft assembly.

I have both here and the inside diameter is the only difference

The inside diameter of the Jap shaft, where it always breaks is SMALLER than the US production assembly. Not BIGGER! So, you should need the smaller diameter kit.

Ok, let me rephrase the question. If you had 1 Japanese and 1 American rake assembly both brand new . Could you tell which was which?

The color if it hasn't been painted. The Japanese has a "purple" tint to it. Other than that, before it breaks, I don't think there is a way of knowing. I will look into it further as I have some side by side in a sister center.

I had a 4:1 go bad and I've never seen or done one before. Trying to search the depths of the forums, YouTube videos, it didn't seem too bad....

Is there a minimum dimension from the clutch face to the rivet.
