  • Gearbox whines

One of our a-2 machines has a whine in it only when the deck is being pulled back up to zero,it whines 'some' when coming up from setting standing pins but not as bad as it does to zero,i know...longer stroke to zero from 270=more whine.Clutch is in nice shape and quiet by itself,i dont see wormshaft movement (in-out) while it runs.Wormy going bad?4-1 goin south? Also have another just starting to do the whine noise, its only just starting though. You dont hear the whine while all machines are running...too noisy back there,i caught it while i was doing a basic machine check up.,you know....whats loose, missing,or ready to wear out type of check. Thanks for your help!!

    Re: Gearbox whines

I have found quite often that it has been the rear worm shaft bearing.

Also check the spring in the spring tube, I have had them go bad and that makes the gearbox work alot harder than it should have to! Just another thought.

          Re: Gearbox whines

Masternuts got it nailed, just be very careful of the fine threads on the worm shaft, when replacing the bearing, if you nick them ,they act like a dye , rethreading the nut, but not in a manner you will be happy with. You can file off the first five threads if you do damage them, but best to take care in the first plasce.
