• Sensitive Deck Problem

This has been a PITA since it started. Had the Senior PBA bowlers in and everything ran great, 2 days after they leave lane 17 starting wobbling pins but not in a constant way. One day it would be fine and the next would be terrible, we found out that the rake was just catching the Geneva cam roller every once and awhile and after moving the rake over via shims everything worked great. Ran great for 2 days and then acted up again except this time it started dropping pins about every 12th rack. Checked timing and went through the 1-1 check listed here on Bowl-Tech and even though the timing was off 1/2" the thing still didn't set new pins very well. We said to heck with it and removed the upper deck and set it out on the lane so we could see if something was rubbing but everything looked great. Put it back in and doubled checked the cable adjustment and just couldn't get a feel for what was wrong other than the fact the 1-1 might be going out. Got lucky and was on-line when Billman sent me an instant message wishing a Happy Thanksgiving, got to talking with him a bit about the problem and without hesitation he asked how the needle bearings were in the deck drive shaft. I had no idea so we commenced on taking the complete deck out and sure enough when we removed the shaft the bearings were froze as froze could be. Not having any extra of these jewels laying around and being Thanksgiving Day it was impossible to get any. So as not to take up all Mike's web space on this subject the bearings are what was bad. Thanks again Billman as this sure made my day to have this lane up and running again. Needless to say I will keep these in stock and order a shaft even though this one was good I don't need to be pushing my luck. Is there a way to lube these needle bearings without removing them or is this something I need to just go through and replace as the expiration date has more than likely expired. Well, had a problem and with help found the solution and thought I would post it. Since everything around here was closed even the day after Thanksgiving I did find a place on-line that is open until 9 opm 5 days a week and until 6:00pm on the weekends and has an emergency number for after hours and holidays. Paid a little more to have them sent next day Saturday but it was worth it as any lane down this time of year only cost me money. They sell every type of bearing and some other stuff and sending it next day Saturday when it was already 3:00pm impressed me. I will post the name of the site and since I don't know the policy here if it's removed I will understand. Very reasonably priced and cheaper than I could have got here if there would have been anyone open.

Thanks again to Mike for this site and Billman for saving the day.

Re: Sensitive Deck Problem of the weekly lubrication points is the bearings for the main deck shaft. Just a few drops where the shaft meets the main deck will allow the oil to enter the bearings. I wouldn't go through and change bearings just because a few froze up. I would start though with some penetrating fluid to help loosen up the rest of them if you feel they may be a little on the rough side. Good luck...

Advise worth way more than two cents.
One of the most overlooked, yet most troublesome lub points on the pinsetter. What you suggest is de-rigueur.

I know you can laugh about it now but when the deck got near 270 setting pins did it look like it
