    Matt:

Both of the pulleys are keyed to the pulley shaft. The pulley shaft takes a lot of stress, and it's not unheard of for the shaft to snap. I've never heard of a pulley shaft key coming out, but there's always a first time ...

Verify that the shaft is in one piece, and be sure that you lubricate the pulley shaft bearings as part of your quarterly clean/grase/oil routine, because the pulley shaft that snapped here was running on dry/rough bearings:

      Heya,

I had a machine doing the "wobbling pins" routine one time. I went ahead and changed all the cables, with no improvement. So, I changed them again, thinking I had an out-of-spec cable somewhere.

After not correcting the problem, I checked out everything else. Ended up being one of the keys in the shaft had broken/shattered, and was still in place. The pulley was enough out of place to still set pins, just not very good. If you have older machines, might as well check the roller bearings that mount in the frame. I have seen these go bad. They arent a real pleasure to replace, but might as well do it if you have the assy apart.

        Matt,
I recently went through the exact problem you mention. One of the keys had worn flat with the keyway allowing the pulley to rotate on the shaft. Pay close attention to which one is slipping, I pulled the whole shaft only to find out is was the gearbox side pulley that was slipping (coulda changed that one on the machine). chances are though you will need to replace the shaft anyways if it has gone that far.

Hey guys when lubing bearings use moly lube grease. This gease does not dry out. I have bearings that are not dry after 10 yrs. I also use this grease on the spline shaft on gearbox clutch. I have not changed a spline shaft in over 12 yrs. I do check them annually. But spline is not rusty.
          have a good one>
