  • Never seen THAT!

    Any ideas what happened here?

    IMAG0566.jpg

I've never seen this (I'm not a Pro-Shop guy), My guy asked me if I had any ideas on what might have caused this 'Explosion' of the filler. The hole was filled in two stages, he was certain the bottom layer was cured well before the second was poured.

I told him I knew some folks that would have the answers (that be Y'all).

I have a feeling he used super glue or another epoxy and then put the plug in, by the way they do not mix well together. I seen a ball blow a hole in it 5" in diameter and fill the room full of smoke.

Nope, (he read your RE) no super glue, the hole was clean and dry for the first pour. The first pour was well cured (tested) before the second pour.

Also, in the second pic, the green ball is not hardening up. It's been a couple days now.

How much does heat and humidity play a role in hardening of the epoxy?

Could have just got the mixture wrong then, I have seen this when other epoxies have been mixed together.

I'll get more info on what kind epoxy and hardener ratio he uses. We're both scratching our heads as to what went wrong,...
          so it don't happen again!

          Thanks Dave,

I have seen the fast plug do this if it was old.

If he was mixing both at the same time, could he have gotten a double dose of hardener in one and none in the other? -- JohnP

The two were mixed/poured separately. He filled and drilled 1000s of balls (I've watched at least once )

When he drilled it out, it was like dust.

from my brief stint in pro shop work, i had a ball once that just wouldn't set right. it was days and days and still not hard. i mixed the ratios wrong and didnt use enough hardener. drilled it out to start all over again and it came out of the ball like nasty sticky snot. it was a good learning process as to what not to do in the future. as far as the volcano on the one ball, never seen that but very interesting. hope things are going good in the nice new center down there. will have to come and say hi sometime.

Quick plug erupts if moisture gets into it. Been there, done that
