  • Heads up

I recently accepted a couple days where I am running the front of house as well as the back. I've done this in other centers but this is the first center that I noticed something rather disturbing. We all have seen unruly kids, over-active kids and kids that just have way to much curiosity or energy. I stepped down to the approach to ask one child (in the presence of his mother) to stop running out onto the lane. They were most cooperative and I didn't think much of it until I glanced up minutes later to see him pulling the access panel on the approach up. Previous centers needed a screwdriver or some sort of wedge but the new place has holes to allow easy access. This kid almost had the panel pulled out of the way but I think his parent caught him before me as he dropped it back into place. He must have been about 8 or so and I hate to think what could have happened if he had stuck his hand down there or god forbid his head. These panels are in between the foul line and the sure-pik lift. Planning on closing off the handy finger holes....I would rather spend an extra minute prying the panel up than dealing with a major accident.

I think I posted this before but it's a great idea....had an unruly party bunch. Kids were on one lane and parents wandering around. They discovered the reset button and how much fun it was to hit it just before the ball got to the deck. I came up from the back and told them to stop. Mentioned it to the desk and returned to the back. Heard the sweep being hit again, went to the desk and they said that if it got hit one more time they were getting kicked out. I told him to hold off and that and I was going to take care of it. I laid on the catwalk over the lane with a handful of bolts and an old part. Sure enough within a few minutes the sweep got hit again. I cut the power to the machine and dropped the parts down onto the deck. Nice clanging sound, wish I coulda seen the look on their faces. Parents show up and I tell them that I think I can fix it but not sure. Also that this is not the first time they hit the button, they had been doing it all night long. I kill a good 15-20 minutes of their paid hour laying on the deck banging the machine with a couple wrenches. Got a nice rest, listened to the music. Finally I crank the sweep back and forth a little, collect the parts and walk up front wiping my hands. They had 10 minutes or so left and not once was the sweep hit.

I use a suction cup for picking up the panels. If you close off the hole, this might be a way to pick them up?

I hate it when people deliberately hit the machines. One night during blacklight bowling, a bunch of kids were hitting the machines. I went to the desk, and made an announcement over the PA system:

"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention for a minute. If one more machine gets hit, all of the lanes will be turned off, and we can go home early. Thank you."

After that announcement, not one machine was hit; and we closed at our normal time.

a center I used to work at (before I got to the mechanical side) they used a small plunger to lift the panel. it was also access to the outlet to plug in the oiler.

I agree with Steve AND here is what I have done for this issue.

If this is a Synthetic Approach, closing off the hole would be very wise. Then you can go out and buy a Suction Grip, as Steve suggested, for easy removal by mechanics and staff.

If this is a wooden approach, counter sink a small pressed-in nut (5/16-24). The mechanics and the staff would then keep a 5/16 - 24 X 2" "Eye Bolt" to easily screw in a couple of threads and lift for removal. This takes away any possibility for children to open these access panels.

Our Brunswick lanes delivered in 2010 did not even come with a hole, instead a suction grip was part of the toolkit that came with the install

I'm searching for previous posts, but haven't seen anything so far so I'll post here for now. We have wood approaches and sure piks and no access panel to get to the lower pulley. Had one disintegrate both bearings so I need to take bracket and all off, the innermost part of the bearings are still on the shaft, got the rest off. Last one I did was a nightmare, I can barely reach from the top. So my question is how to make an access panel for it??
