  • Half-Scale Bowlers "Honor League"

Hey guys- I was wondering if anyone would be interested in joining a half-scale bowling league with the other mini-lane owners here on Bowltech? Obviously free to join, fun-based friendly competition with scores posted on the "honor system". We could use a Bowltech thread as the basis for league updates and stats. I understand that we don't all have the same type of lane (different surfaces, construction methods, lane lengths, etc), but we all are using the Lind's pins and similar balls. I was thinking that we could see who has interest in joining, and once a league base of guys was established, we can bowl our first series to calculate handicaps (for the league) and go from there. Many options could be available for a weekly league, such as: head-to-head, total pinfall, or team bowling. Everyone can bowl their series anytime they choose within the given week (schedule could be set up), and submit their scores before a deadline. Just fishing around for some thoughts on the idea, so please let me know of any interest...

In speaking with Jimmy in the past, I know that in his next version of OpenScore he plans to have "online" real-time play, so this league would only be temporary until that function is up and running. Keeping track would be done by posting your scores, and, if you like, posting a picture of your OpenScore scoresheet, manual scoresheet, etc. Again, just fishing around for thoughts and to see how much interest there would be. I guess a minimum of 4 guys to start would be great, but the more the merrier!.....

I'd be down. How about 3 game singles handicap. Post your scores for the week by Midnight on Sunday, secretary posts the updated stats on Monday.

I'm up for it. I already have a league, so should I use those scores each week and submit those?

Yes sir! Let's see how many more respond this week...maybe we could make the deadline for the first three games (for handicap) on 10/14...

I don't see any problem with submitting your scores from your other league Steve. I'm more concerned about you kicking our asses!

I'm trying out a piece of league standings software from http://www.leagueassistant.com and will probably end up registering it since it'll run on the same computer I'm using for Openscore. Maybe we can use that to keep track of the standings. Right now I'm using scoresheets that I designed since I haven't built a camera mount for OpenScore yet.

I haven't bowled a whole lot of complete games on the lane yet but I'm guessing my average is probably around 165. Any suggestions for handicap? 90% of 210?

When I get my lane done I'm in!!! It wont be for a bit, but I'll keep you folks posted.

BTW, am I the only one who will have a lane affected by temperatures ranging from 0F - 100F??

Great! So far, so good. Three confirmed interested, and Detroit will be joining when his lane is complete. I haven't bowled in a league in about 8 years, and was never a league manager. So if anyone has experience and would volunteer to calculate running handicaps and leaders, its fine with me. Deberber, if that program you were talking about is good at keeping league numbers and you have the time and are willing, then I nominate you, brother, as league manager. I of course will do it if no one is willing and/or interested, but my vote still goes to dberber. Steve: I'd say we should leave it up to you on what scores you want to use. You could submit your other league scores, or if you have the extra time and are interested in bowling another series, then bowl a new series and submit it! Glad to see some interest already!!! Lets give it a few more days and decide to put in our first series before either 10/07 or 10/14... I'm really looking forward to this!!! Take care guys...

Sure, I will use my league scores, and if there are days our league doesn't bowl, I'll bowl three games to fill in for the on-line league. As a suggestion to handicap, I use the difference between the bowler's average and 200, so if my average on my league is 175, I'll give myself a 25 pin handicap to bring it up to 200, same with all other bowlers, so we all have a handicap average of 200. I never undestood the concept of 90% of 210.......

I'd be down for this! I'm not a very good half-scale bowler so handicap will be my friend.

I think this is a great idea, I'm in, but might be a while before I can partake, the lane is not in bowl-able condition at this time.
If it can't be fixed with a hammer, try a bowling pin! They're heavier and more surface area for whacking!

So we've got Chad, Steve, Tim and myself so far. If you guys want to give it a go, maybe we can start this weekend, get those scores in by Sunday night? Any others interested?

                        Handicap 100% of 200? (175 average gets 25 pins)

How many weeks? If there's 4 of us, it'll take 3 weeks for us each to bowl against all the others. We could try this out with a 4 week league, 3 weeks of regular competition, then 1 week for the position round? Hopefully others will be ready to join in a month?

What will the point system be? 1 point per game, and 1 point for series?

Handicap off of 200 sounds great to me...it's what I'm used to from my days as a league bowler. A short (3-4week) league to start sounds great to me, and from there we will see who else is ready to go, or we can begin a new league after the short one. I'm definately in for getting it started this weekend, I will roll a series tonight or tomorrow to get some scores by Sunday just in case we get enough reply's by then. Let me know if I can help with anything Dberber, even sending you a portion of the money it will take to get everything up and running. I'm really looking forward to this!!!

As far as how many points to assign for games/series,I am not a good person to ask. I'll be on board for whatever you guys agree on!

Question: Not sure how many of you are married or otherwise, but should we include "interested" spouses in the league if they wish? Haven't approached my wife about it, but I imagine she may want to partake....if we want to keep it to us "bowl-tech-mini" guys, thats fine too! Let me know!

Kind of slow night here at home, so I bowled my first league series (in case we get confirmation from the 4 active mini-bowlers that we will be starting on Sunday, or at least figurin handicaps by then), and although I will not give out the scores just yet, I will give a mini-spoiler....I rolled my first Turkey during the series!! Still no "Official" 200 games while keeping score, but I've come within 20 pins in the past. Unfortunately, I tend to string together open frames and sometimes overthink a shot when bowling on a strike, double, or spare If we don't get going this weekend, I will hold my series for when we do get going. I took photos of my OpenScore score sheet to keep track.

I think we should let anyone who wants to join the league in, just as long as they are committed to bowling on the league (no 1 time league bowlers.) We could use icons next to people's names, like if you are a house owner (okay, technically a lane owner) you could have a yellow star or something, for family of the house owner, have a red star, and one for everyone else have a blue star, or something along that lines. Most of us are here because we are building mini lanes, are mini lane owners, or are curious about building a mini lane. I feel that we should input all scores from all bowlers here for our benefit, and have a printout for all other bowlers until Dberber can get the AMBC up, then let all non bowltech members view scores on the AMBC site to view scores, just my .02$
