  • Pre and/or post bowling

We have what I consider too many pre and post bowls at our center especially among the youth leagues. I have been informed by our youth league director that USBC will not allow the leagues to limit how many pre or post bowls a person can have in a season. Is this true? We have one kid that pre bowls almost every week; that's ridiculous.

I believe you can l limit the post bowling to emergency's only, but the bowlers have the right under USBC rules to prebowl. Prebowling does seem to get out of hand here sometimes but the way that I try and look at is that I would rather have the youth or adult bowler prebowl and have them in the league than not. I have a couple kids that prebowl almost the whole first half of the season because of other commitments then bowl the last half of the season.

A league cannot adopt a rule that would have the effect of not permitting any prebowling/
postponements. The league must grant a prebowl/postponement when the team is unable to
field a legal lineup for the following reasons:
      1. Some of its bowlers are participating in the USBC Championships, state or local association
championship tournaments or attending an annual meeting.
      2. There is sufficient cause.
      3. An emergency situation.
Failed safety course.Question #1:In case of fire what steps do you take? Apparently 'Friggin long ones!" is the wrong answer.

I'd be happy to have any league bowler - even if they pre or post bowled every week. They are bowling in my center.

BLS hint- don't enter any prebowl scores before you send the league out. If one score entered, the program things the week has been bowled and there are just a lot of missing scores. So it will want to export the NEXT weeks lineups - pay attention to the dates!

I guess it just gets to me . I think if you join a league you should be there to bowl with the league to enjoy the competition and comeraderie. The one kid that always pre bowls is on a wrestling team that has matches every Sat. , so he goes to them instead of bowling . They know wwhen they sign up what days and times the league bowls . 99% of these are not emergencies or tournaments . They've just found something to do that they like better . Allowing them to do this does not help to instill any sense of responsibility in them . JMHO

All leagues here can re-schedule matches with exception to several that cannot in the last few weeks of a season. Those leagues also require oiling prior to deferred/pre bowling...grrr. One of them also has a rotating set of patterns that correspond to the week of play...a pain in the rear with the walker only holding 4 patterns.

BUT, I don't mind deferred/pre bowling if it means the doors stay open.

Our jrs. have to makeup as a team, so they don't miss for every small issue. Adult men don't miss very often, but we have couple leagues that allow 2 people to makeup.(one couple has a wedding or something)

I can think of one nagging problem with pre-bowling, and that is when they want a fresh lane pattern when they come in! As long as there are guidelines that are followed to keep me from having to stop what i am doing to go an oil, then what Kanga was getting at, with keeping the doors open, might take the cake!

I've never had a prebowl or post bowl ask for fresh oil. I certainly put them on a lane that has not been bowled on or relatively fresh but nobody has insisted on having fresh lanes or they walk.

I purposely try and put them on an older shot. Makes them want to bowl at there schedule time.

Leagues that reschedule their match (the ones that require oiling) MUST book the date and time to ensure it is possible to have the lanes oiled at that time; they have no choice there, bud they understand.

And we also will try to put the other league def/pre matches on the least used pair.

A bit of flexibility and understanding from both will ensure they return for the next season.

The major problem with pre or post bowling is that the bowlers are not given a USBC award for an honor score. If the bowlers knew about this rule, they would have second thoughts about pre or post bowling.

                          PRE or POST BOWLING
                          • Scores bowled first can be seen unless the league rules or past precedence do not allow.
                          • Substitutes can pre or post bowl.
                          • No honor score recognition when bowling unopposed.
                          • HELPFUL HINT - Announce to the league that requests for make-up games must be made prior to the scheduled match.
                          • Emergency postponements are when a team cannot field a legal lineup for reasons beyond its control.

Last season we had make ups or post bowling just about every week... mostly teams from one of our mixed leagues. To a point I thought it was a bit out of hand and really shouldn't have been allowed as much as it was because most didn't have a good reason for it and they of course wanted fresh oil. The problem it created a few times was when they were in for the make up we had to turn away open bowlers because they would complain if we put open bowlers next to them. So besides for oiling twice for the same team(s) that week we were expected to also lose open play $ because they had to make up. IMO it shouldn't have been allowed by the league itself because the majority of the time the post bowling was for ridiculous reasons like going to a monster truck show... really those teams should've forfeited the points and not been allowed to match scores. It was quite a headache for us anyway, don't want to lose them but at the same time we lose open customers. What do you guys think for how to deal with this? We retained the league bowlers but definitely don't want to go through the same thing this season. Any thoughts?
